Carter AFB help, please
Have been working on the 62 Dart this week.
Got a problem with the Carter AFB carb - had this before on another one and did not fix it that time....
The car is bogging off the line and I have traced this to the pump not giving a full shot.
Having stripped and inspected it, the pump "piston seal" is worn. I tried to replace it with one out of an Edelbrock re-build kit; and now (you have guessed it) the carb has not pump shot at all. It works when you operate it manually but in practice it will not work.
The problem is that due to the "novel" design of the inlet manifold (4 holes as opposed to a nice big opening), other carbs - like a 600 cfm Edelbrock will not fit as the butterflies will not open.
So...it is back to square one and try to get the original carter repaired.
Does anyone know where to get the correct pump kit re-build parts for one of these wonderful carbs?
I guess the twins may have come up against this on the 63 Dart; but at the moment I have a dead car in the garage....

The bolt spacing will fit a holley or indeed an edelbrock 600 cfm (I have a spare) but the butterflies on the Carter car are REALLY small and open in to the holes in the manifold. On the Edelbrock the butteflies foul the inlet manifold, so won't open..

Having checked again (properly) the Carter is indeed smaller than the Holley, but as the Edelbrock is drilled for squarebore and spreadbore it will bolt on. However, even experimenting with a thin spacer, the throttle blades will not open fully.
Blue's spacer/adapter may be sufficiently tall to enable the Edelbrock to fit.
The Carter is not clearly marked but has "1430" and "1540" cast in to it. Will do some research in to what carb it is....
A replacement pump assembly is still the best get out of jail card.
