heddy question

Post by Jeff »

OK Lads... Looks like the bottom end on the 273 is all new and good. So we are probably leaving that in the car. Now the 318ci I have in the garage looks like it has 360 heads. Will these heads and inlet fit on the 273ci?

Joe has just driven it home, says the heads on it are shot. Trans is real nice and smooth.

Any ideas guys? Oh and the core plugs are all OK!

Physically it will all bolt up, however, the smaller bore of the 273 requires a bore notch to clear the larger inlet valves on a 340 head. The 360 inlet valve is slightly smaller, so might need less of a notch or none at all I can't remember. Unless the heads have been skimmed, if you just bolted them on, the compression will take a dump big time. You can get a clue if the heads have been skimmed or not by looking at the rocker gear on the 318. If it is the stamped steel type, then it's unlikely they have. If it's the adjustable type like the 273 then they probably have. You thought this was going to be easy didn't you....

Spare engine is...... 318ci
casting No. 2536030 1967-75 LA

Heads on this are...
casting No. 3418915 360 1970-72 65cc-73cc 1.88int. 1.60exh.

(3418915 casting number is the same as a 340? But mine also have 360 stamped on the other end of the head. So I guess that is what they are).

Now I must make sure it is a 273ci in the Dart! Stranger things have happened!
