Blue's stroker build
Well after several false starts, cock ups and general ineptitude, it's finally happening.
Spent a few hours fully de burring the 400 block, and generally grinding away anything excess. Had it acid dipped and fitted new cam bearings. Painted the inside with 2 coats of Glyptal, and resisted the temptation to slosh the outside with black stonechip, and went with my usual Chivvy orange instead.
Block is now at Hausers for boring and line boring for new caps. heads are Edelbrock RPM, ported by Indy with larger 2.19 and 1.88 valves fitted. I say fitted, slung in more like it, the bleedin' valve heights are all over the place. This must be the top quality machining the Americans are always banging on about when they are slagging off anything made in China. Indy obviously work to the nearest foot rather than thou, so they are at Hausers as well to be sorted out, not what you want with a brand new set of heads.
The stroker kit which is all 440 Source is there as well for a thorough check over, we'll see if that fairs any better.
So that's it for now, I'll continue when I get it all back. I was hoping to have it in for the Nats, but that looks unlikely at the moment, I don't want to Bananarama! and i don't know what other hassle and hold ups I'll have to contend with. I'll fill in all the specs as it gets built up...

From what I've been reading, ally caps are the way to go, especially if there's any sign of detonation. As you know, I stayed with the stock main caps and may live to regret that decision, but I've yet to hear the engine ping. I drive with one ear listening to the exhaust and one listening to the engine.

I'll be watching your build Blue, looking to do a 400 stroker aswell, are you going 512?
I can see a stroker dyno day happening in the future
there must be a few running strokers at the moment.

I agonised long and hard over what size to build, I had originally planned to do a screaming 470, but cubic inches won out in the end and it is now 511. That's a bit big for the heads I have, but it will produce a shed load of torque at lower revs which hopefully will do the job. If it doesn't work out, I'll have to get a better head and intake combo....

As long as you get the block clean enough, the paint will not come off. I painted one about 15 years ago, and it's still all on there. I've yet to read of any professional engine builder that is happy to recommend 440 Source stuff, and most of them have not used their parts, Geoff included. If it all checks out dimensionally without needing any correction, then I'll be happy with it. I'm told the cranks come out of the same Chinese foundry as Scat and Eagle, and there's plenty of budget builds going on with their parts.

It's a Weiand that I've spent more than a few hours porting and generally tidying up. I have an M1 single plane with an 850 DP that I'll use to break in the cam and generally de bug the motor with, and then I'll swap on the tunnel ram. Will have to make a new hood scoop as well, not especially looking forward to that.
