Daily driver

Post by kev73dart »

Some interesting views here.

I have an R32 GTR with 470BHP that I have used on the road for the last 6 years, but never as a daily driver, it is too fierce and also too pretty!!
Maintenance wise, both me & my son are hands on so it has never cost us a lot, even the engine swop to a later lump was done by us! Even at that power it returns around 28 on a run and low 20's around town.
I have not come across a road car that is anywhere near as much fun.
Jacquie, my wife has also had an R33 GTS-t as a daily driver, this was 2.5 6 Cylinder turbo & RWD. This was good fun and not bad on fuel. Arse out action all day long :D

I have to say that for a day to day runaround with power when you need it, you are not going to go far wrong with a high spec Turbo diesel from either Audi or VW (and some others I can think of)
Like Sandy, I have been in Company car comfort for a few years and the best ones I have had were: X Type Diesel, Accord 2.2 Diesel Sport, Golf GT TDi, all giving good performance with 45 mpg. Couple this with long service intervals and it becomes an attractive option.

If I could get my good lady to part with her S Type Jag, I would definitely get her into a diesel, mind you the Jag is a 3.0 V6 yet still returns 32mpg on runs to the lake district (about 15 around town :( )

Personally, I would struggle with a Scooby or Evo, whilst I know they are bags of fun they are bloody thirsty compared to the GTR
I would go for a Monaro, or VXR8, I have had one as a rental car in the US (called Pontiac G8) and it was superb, but you can get it as a 3.9 V6 over there. This doesn't really fit the budget though.
For the budget I think I would go for an Audi A6 or A8 with a big TDi or a Skyline R33 GTS-t or Skyline R34 GTT (both these are 2.5 turbo & RWD)

Anyway, ignore me. I have just bought an Aston Martin DB7 as my 'daily driver' but I am only here one week in every 5 :)

Cheers
Kev

Amazin' vid Ivor, boy can he use that scoopy! :thumbright: :thumbright: 8-) 8-)

Whilst diesels have come into the equation as its no suprise these days. Allthought on revability and horsepower cant match the petrol versions but on torque they can. :thumbright:

My Alfa 156 2.4 JTD is the 10 valve version, It's got 150 bhp and 225 lbs of torque (which is more than the 24v V6). It will pull you around at less than 1000 rpm in 5th gear and pick up quite well without having to changing down. It's at 3000 rpm at 90 mph. They are suposed to rev to 5500 rpm but I've never pushed it that much, but I've never had to worry about weather I can get past a line of slow moving vehicles. One lad on the Alfa board put a picture of his speedo up and the car Bananarama! the 150 mph mark  He did say he was on the Autobahn . I havent tried pushin' it past 100 mph but I checked the trip log when my wife had been to Coventry the other week and she had hit 120. And there's me thinkin' she was a shy and sencitive soul

O.k Alfas arnt every one's cup o' tea, but I love 'em. I've had the car over 6 month's and so far nothin's fallen off. The build quality is as good as most cars these days and it's got all the creature comforts Leather, Climate and a crackin sound system.

The later 20 valve started with 175 bhp, and the latest version kicks out 215 bhp, but is probably no more economical than the V6. :?

Skyline consumption

Post by kev73dart »

I couldn't put money on it, but I am damn sure ours is better than that. Ours does have standard injectors, standard fuelling and it gets to Pod & back on £25 max.
That equates to 24mpg
Oh, and it runs 11's :D

Ahh but you've got to remember that TDi was evolved by the Fiat group and so we owe all our diesel technology to them ;) I cant work out what you have now but I know I think this Alfa is the dogs :thumbright:

Thanks to everyone for their posts.

I have thought about an Audi A8, the 'facelift' model, of an age that falls outside proposed new retrospective road tax banding.

What I was not prepared for was the unbelievable insurance quote, even for an old fart like me. This is one of the disadvantages of not having any no claims discount, bar what my company can offer by way of no accident notification. If I keep the company car, supposedly, any no claims I have stays with that. I suspect the insurance company is wrong on that as any claims I make against the company car goes against the company insurance policy and, barring having to inform the private car insurance company that I have had an accident, it should impose no penalty on my insurance culpability.

I was somewhat surprised at the quote from AON as we already have four cars insured with them and I would have thought they would have been more flexible.

Still, we have a couple of irons in the fire, an insurance fudge, and a couple of cars to look at.

Anyway, thanks for all the posts. :thumbright:

AON have been taken over by Sureterm, Sandy. They have changed a lot of things. So much so that my original contact there left to take a lesser paid job because he just couldn't agree with their policies etc. Shame.

That vid of the Scooby driver's an eye opener, isn't it! He's quite handy, I'll give him that. :D
24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not…
