I kind of bought my first mopar by accident, I was looking for something fast after I wrote off my 3.0 capri, I'd been reading my Brothers car craft and popular hot rodding for years so It had to be a muscle car, I was hoping for a camero, mustang, 55 chevy or a charger, anyway a mate worked with a fella who was selling his 70 GTX! to be honest I didn't have a clue what a 70 GTX looked like, but went and had a look he wanted £3500 back in 1987 which was quite a lot and the colour was bloody awful, but a deal was done and I got it for £3250.
It was quick but could have been quicker so after a gearbox rebuild, new convertor and good tune up on Steve Thomson rolling road, I took it up the Pod and in 1988 entered the wynn's custom car pro street challenge and did all 8 rounds driving there and back ended up 5th, and all I ever did was drop the exhaust and run it, really loved it still do, I've had 9 mopes since then and will carry on.

Then a guy over the road bought a brand new '67 Barracuda fastback in metallic blue with a blue interior, I loved that car! I used to pass a nearly new orange Roadrunner with Cragers on it everyday on my way to school, I really liked that too.
Up to that point I still liked pretty much any American muscle car, and there were quite a few around here back then. What really sealed my fate was in about '79 when I finally earned enough money to run one.
There were 3 cars locally that I could afford, with my £350. A very clean '68 Barracuda which I ruled out as it was right hand drive and automatic. A '64 convertible 4 speed Mustang which I ruled out as it needed paint and a new top. And the roughest of the lot, a '67 Barracuda 4 speed Formula S, which was thrashed to death.
I actually managed to swap my 1600 Corsair for the Fourmula S, which wasn't really the blinding deal it might sound at the time. But I was happy as Larry. With cash in my pocket I went straight up to John Wolfe Racing and bought a set of headers and header mufflers and a decent shifter, the rest is history.....

The Mopar that did it for me was Dick and Tony Gransdens 69 Roadrunner ( I think Rex? Harrison had it before them) Was late seventies. The car went on to be John Mills racecar. Closest I could afford at the time was a 68 273cu in Satellite which I think ended up Pro streeted.Had a great time in that car though.
Remember the Superbird from the South circular at Trinity Road after Chelsea It always seemed to be having the timing checked on it in the layby.

Forgot to mention the Brighton Mopar meet. Once I knew a Chally was the car for me I went to a meet in Brighton held at a rugby club, in 1993. I went in my Triumph Herald and met John Marsh in his white Vanishing Point clone and it was he that sorted me out my car about 6 months later.
I also remember the Sassy Grass Green 71 R/T Chally now owned by Jay Gilmore was there, before Jay owned it, and it was burning so much oil the owner had to take all the plugs out and clean them before driving home.

I started wanting a Mopar, ( Challenger especially), after going to see Vanishing Point, and l used to travel wherever it was on to see it again!!!!
Then an old friend of mine, ( Pete Hemmings), used to own a repair centre in Streatham, and one day he took me out in his '70 T/A Challenger, that was it, HAD to have one after that!!!!!!
Can't believe how these Mopars get in your blood though, we now have 4 'Chryslers' !!!!!

yeah Sassy green 71 R/T 383 , i nearly bought that car , well sort of !! !! dad was intrested in buying a challenger !!!! , it was brought in to the country by a place called american dream in maidstone ! cookoo farm i think from memory late 88 , i just got my loan for the charger & being 17 it was burning a hole im my pocket !! went over to look , but was still at the docks or something, run out of petrol , & or had problems with getting the cap off !! car was owned by a guy in ramsgate after that for a few yearsMattH wrote:Forgot to mention the Brighton Mopar meet.
