So this is largely to stir up a lively debate but i'd like peoples opinions and to get an idea of how expensive and/ or dumb an idea this would be ... ;)

At present i have a Pro-Trans built reverse pattern manual 727, with Cheetah shifter & PTC anti-balloon convertor, all new.

A- What would be my chances of selling that lot for enough to buy a manual box & all necessary bits?
B- What manual box (4 speed i'm thinking?) Bearing in mind with the gas 600hp is likely?
C- How much more of a pain in the ass will a full manual be compared to a manual-shifted auto?
D- How much will i regret having sold the box i originally got from Pete along with the modded Z-bar, etc :roll:

This has come about as it's my last chance to change anything major on the car now before the big registering build-up, and because someone on here posted up a very exciting little in-car clip of a manual-shifted 1/4 mile, AND because the Belve was originally a manual, AANNNDDDD because i've got the N2O kit in the bag and i'm fidgeting again...
No-one will believe you...

Ok mate just DO IT, just love manual trans cars :)
I know they are inconsistent performers, they hurt yer leg, they rattle, get drivetrain shunt and all that crap, but I would'nt have it any other way.
The fun you get when you go bangin the stick around is worth everything, I say go for it :thumbright:

I normally get a good tellin off and told not to be so silly when i come up with these ideas- don't go ENCOURAGING me fer gawds sake :shock:

I bet clutches don't last too long!

...and i'm thinkin a rev limiter would be wise.

Twin plate/flywheel combo, light, bulletproof and same price as a decent street/strip clutch and flywheel as seperates, you don't need encouraging either............... ;)

Yes, the dia, type, 900 dollars is prob what you'd pay for a decent flywheel and twin plate clutch kit any way so i don't think its too dear meself.
Six Pack Speed on their way over in a couple of weeks to the Nats, check em for a price :D
My clutch is Bananarama! out and I just got hold of a Zoom dia. type clutch kit for less than 300 notes for the 440 in me Chally, it'll last a couple of years and some casual abuse ;)

Manul conversion


1) peddle box and linkages + appropriate solid stop for clutch peddle based on style of clutch (borg and beck 3 finger is a longer throw clutch than the other type)
2) Z bar + ball studs and balls stud mounts and spring and Z bar to clutch fork rod with washer insulator rubber 2 nuts and a special pair of clips
3) bellhousing + collection of offset dowels + dial guage mount for flywheel and a day to centre bell housing on motor
4) clutch fork
5)box
6) appropriate mounts
7) weld in floor hump
8) correct spline and length of prop
9) throw out bearing
10) correct bush reamed to correct size in the end of ya crank
11) correct lower bell housing cover
12) appropriate cross member
13) Rubber baggy for the clucth fork + spring clip to hold it in
14) rubber sleave for the z bar to peddle box link
15 rubber shifter boot
16 metal frame to hold down shifter boot
17 cloth shifter boot to go over rubber if you want
18) appropriate speedo drive...probably the same but length of cable may be different
19) correct connector and wire loom for back up lights
20) swap steering column back so it doesn't have quadrant and inner sleave
21) correct seats for ya shifter no use having a bench and a streight shifter 2nd and 4th are not then accessible

twin plate clutch uses shorter throw out sleave for throw out bearing

hydraulic may be a good idea


would suggest a new steel flywheel
old Hi chrome cast iron wheels tend to Craze due to heat over the years and fall to bits at Hi rpm

the guys at the top do a light weight steel wheel for a 440 with any ring gear you want for any starter you want and any clutch that will fit without compromising the mounting area

i ve just had one for mine using middle of the road components

i.e single plate 10"+ a smidge clutch 6 bolt 2 dowel used on v8 GM as a replacement for my 9.5 inch 3 bolt clutch cost me about 600 to my door

kit includes all parts
flywheel +bolts
clutch +dowels and bolts
throw out bearing +any adaptors
driven plate sprung or not to match application and output. selected from OEM or well known brands if possible as its the consumable part

but take about 2 months due to them building and balancing it for you

I think his car was a manual to start with Dave, so he should have most of the weld on parts still on the vehicle, even the pedal box is probably still intact, just needs a clutch pedal sliding on the end of the shaft, z-bar bracket will still be there....................should be a relatively hassle free install ;)

Yup, the car was a manual so all the brackety stuff is still there, manual tunnel, etc.
I have the pedal and possibly the Z-bar.

I've a feeling cost will scupper the idea for now though.
My budget is basically whatever i can sell the auto stuff for so if a clutch is the best part of a grand, add the box itself & all the bits n bobs... what are we talking, £2-3000 ?

Reading through Dave's notes again... is a bench seat a problem? The was originally manual and bench seat so surely that's ok?
