Hiya Guy,

Bought my Jeep Overlander new in '06 and have put about 50k on it since then. It has been faultless and nothings gone wrong.

Been towing the roadrunner with it all this time and have driven it to the south of france twice @ well over 100 most the way.

Big enough to sleep in the back of too.

It says to me " I haven`t got time to breakdown " ... 233000 miles in 5 years suggests it has rarely been " unavailable " and the previous user obviously had great confidence in it

Am I right in thinking the engine is a Merc diesel ??

Hi Guy, I had same dilemma years ago. Check yer towing weights carefully. A decent trailer is gonna come in around 1000kg unless you tow with a dolly thingy. Target weight on the A bod? 1500kg? Snake City Arizona if you get it wrong. Many others here have more experience than I but my TD5 has about 3500kg limit and was pretty good with 1000kg trailer and 1800kg car. I struggled with near death experiences with less than the TD5.
TD5 is also a good compromise for daily use. Im sure theres other options now - big blingy pickups, better 4x4s, big vans etc.

I loved my 300 crd wasnt an estate but was a brilliant car for the money, not had anything to do with the jeeps, but heard good things about the dodge nitro's Marc's mate had one befor Xmas and Marc used it for a few days and said it was a brilliant car, drove well and went like stink, it was a diesel, but don't know what size the engine was, used to have landrovers for years, only had one td5 and got to say it was a gutless POS and wouldn't have another

Toyota Landcruiser over anything else. Lots round this way,all towing heavy stuff like mini diggers and livestock trailers.
Forget anything Landrover make,all whizz,no go and too much bling these days. Friend bought a new td5 90 for towing,got through 3 clutches in 4000 miles,unlike his 200 tdi that went on forever with plenty of power.

I think that only covers the engine Guy, there's a lot else to go wrong.

Do consider the Toyota Landcruiser. Nothing tougher/faster/more reliable/more special at anything like the money.

I have one - bought it on a whim a while back and have kept it when I never expected to. Can't recommend them enough (and I've had a few cars!)

well its a bit on the large size Mal, plus Mary doesn't want me to have a pick-up

pity really as I have seen a couple that I would like. So I will have to pass Mal plus that would have been way out of my range as far as running costs and purchase price.

with the money I have available I cant find a decent mileage and aged L/cruiser.

but unfortunatly I cant justify the extra insurance poor fuel consumption and £440 a year in tax
