The end of importing modified muscle

Post by db »

Well I guess I'm screwed then :?

I've been ignoring the dreaded DVLA deadline as I simply couldn't do the car any quicker and trying to rush the work was making me miserable.
I've just read the ACE site and after months of nothing, the change has suddenly happened:
http://www.the-ace.org.uk/importing-modified-vehicles/
I've had a quick read and this is the low-down:

I have to PROVE that all mods were done to my car PRE-1998 to stand any chance of legally registering it.

Even though I knew this was coming, it still hasn't really sunk in. I'll read it again tomorrow and look into the detail.

I'm so Bananarama! angry about this, there is absolutely no possible benefit to anyone or anything from this poxy bloody stupid Bananarama! law.
Why the hell do we tolerate being ruled by Bananarama!?
Why can't someone we like be in charge?
Bananarama! Bananarama! Bananarama! Bananarama! Bananarama! Bananarama! Bananarama! Bananarama!!

Mods- sorry for any swears that don't get bananarama'd

I THINK YOUR RIGHT PAUL

IF I WERE YOU I WOULD GET YOUR CAR ALL IN MATCHING PAINT AND LOOKING REALLY SMART BEFORE YOU TRY TO REGISTER IT, I THINK YOU MIGHT SLIP IT BY THEM, BUT JUST LOOK AT ALL THIS PICKUP TRUCK NONSENSE BEING SHIPPED OVER THE MODIFICATIONS ON THEM ARE OUTRAGOUS AND I WOULD THINK OWNERS ARE GOING TO BE IN REAL TROUBLE WITH THEM,

GOOD LUCK WITH YOURS, ACT IGNORANT TILL YOU HAVE TO DEFEND IT

This is why I have been banging on about the DVLA turning up the wick on modified vehicles and why many of those heavily modified cars in the club that are road registered with a V5 have real value.

Obviously as a member of the ACE team I can't be seen to condone any shady dealings, but in my view there are two ways to approach this.

Apply as usual and going a step further than what Duncan has suggested, the real problem is if they call for an inspection are the wheel tubs and front suspension/steering set up, which is a bit of a giveaway.

Trying to make the car look as standard as possible may just take their eye off the ball if it comes to inspection. The car doesn't have a UK identity, so you really have nothing to lose because they can't take away a V5 you don't have.

Ideally of course, it would be great if you actually found its "original" UK V5 and simply apply for the Road Fund License in the usual way, the change of colour or engine size could be slipped through at a later date and shouldn't raise an eyebrow.

I'm not telling you which option I clicked! ;)

Well I went for option 3 on my own car a couple of years ago. Luckily for me I was at a point in the build (I use that term lightly) where I had not bought any of the nice bits for the street use. It really did take the shine off the car and if I'm honest it also took away a large chunk of enthusiasm for finishing the car.

I think the first step is to think positive, it may never come to an inspection.

Get an MOT and press on......it will be a great car when it is done.

All the best,

Pete

I,ve noticed that Terry Redburn has been offering his heavily modded Demon for sale for a while. I was vaguely interested in it, but it's so obviously cut about [done properly I'm sure) that I wouldn't want to risk it.
it can be seen on Rds n sods, caged,
heavily tubbed, fender wall headers etc..

Yes, Dunc i know, but I had the impression from previous psots by Ivor that at MOT time the examiner could call into question certain mods and the overall roadworthyness of the vehicle.

The MOT man now has to answer-
"HAS THE VEHICLE BEEN MODIFIED"

Either...
Keep your MOT man sweet and NEVER make an insurance claim...
Or...
As suggested above, by sheer good luck 'discover' a history pre-98 of all declareable mods, tell your insurance too and go legit!

Of course the other option is to build the car to BIVA specs.

I'll get me coat.
