New ignition switch wiring issue

Post by chris0691 »

My old ignition switch died on my 71 dart so bought a replacement from rockauto. Removed the old one, got the new one in. Indicators, lights, fuel gauge etc works but the car isn't turning over. However there is some slight difference in the wires that are in each connector block
New block (from steering column) goes yellow, black, blue, brown, red, black then 2 spares.
The one from the bulkhead goes yellow, black, blue, brown, red, orange, black then 2 blacks in the end.
Orange I believe is the gear selector light? But there isn't the spot to match it up to the one from the bulkhead.
Also have 2 red wires left over from just under the switch in the column.
Seriously haven't got a clue as to what's going on. I remember this is why I dislike electrics.
If anyone had any ideas as to why it's not starting or where the extra wires live any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Hi Chris....I dont know the answer mate but I would start with your wiring diagram. Get some coloured felt pens and study each wire to and from the switch on the diagram. Draw a really simple version of just the wires relevant to the switch. You will probably be able to work it out...

good luck :thumbright:

Oh...and dont forget, you can do a simple continuity test around the tabs on the switch to work out which tabs feed the accesory, run and start positions in the switch.

Good advice from Steve.

It sounds like the power to the starter solenoid relay (the relays coil) may not be getting there from the new switch?

Cheers both. After some more tatting we got it started in neutral. Not park. So this leads me to believe it's the neutral safety switch causing the problem? Although can't seem to find where it's located. Any ideas?

Left had side of the transmission, probably a 3 pin jobbie that also controls the reversing lights........
