Thinking about rewiring

Post by 68Runner »

After seeing the state of the (potential fire hazard) engine loom and the fact it's 40yrs old I was thinking of replacing the whole loom.
I'm considering using a Rebel wiring harness from Steve Lang.
I just wondered if anybody else has used one to rewire theirs. I was hoping to use the original switches

I've seen that you can buy a Painless kit for a Mopar but they are about $500.

It's going on a 68 Satellite

Used an ez wiring kit on my 56 F100 and it was a doddle. Thought it would have been the same process wiring up this motor

Have you any issues with it not working? I have recently bypassed the bulkhead connector and ammeter which is the main fire hazard, easy fix and cheap. Everything else works and I am very much of the mind if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The engine loom is a joke. Cracked/hard wiring which is a fire hazard waiting to happen.
So, remade that using the correct colours and I'm now waiting on a wiring diagram from the states.
Somebody else has done the ammeter bypass

I was only thinking of using a new loom as

the wipers don't work(could be switch)
Hazard switch doesn't work (not needed for MOT)
Gauge cluster lights don't work
Brake lights don't work (could be switch)
Temp gauge doesn't work(untested sender as yet)
Horn doesn't work
Rear indicators don't work but front does

Headlights (main and dip) and tail lights do work. Yay

For what its worth, for a 'partial' job I chose to yearone harness for the engine bay (nice and easy, all connectors there, colour coded for stock etc) and performed the ammeter bypass myself. (even if its done you might want to check it completely bypasses bulkhead connector.)

For a 'complete' start from scratch the painless seems the way to go - dr.Worman swears by them. Plenty of people done it...

Yep, just done my dart from front to back, used an Ezee wiring kit, just like a painless one.

Pretty straight forward and gives peace of mind, having said that I have got a fire extinguisher to hand in the car :thumbright:

Re made the starting battery cable and earth strap and now the solenoid just clicks.
It can't be the battery as that was new last Friday after buying the car and it started it just fine when taking it off the trailer.
The only other thing to note, is that when I tried to undo the solenoid wire off the starter I think the whole terminal turned at the same time. Could have knackered anything internally.
Hopefully it's ok and I don't need to buy a new starter

Sounds like dying starter.........Bin it and put a high torque mini starter on.
Smaller unit but turns it over like nothing.......also helps if headers are on the future list. :thumbright:

Took the starter off and had a look at the solenoid wiring. It seems the wire had broken the soldered joint. Quick re-solder and she's back up and running. Just got to have a check over the rest of the wiring now.
