Proposed 68 Satellite disc upgrade. Thoughts please
Hi
Just bought my Plymouth and am looking into a front drum to disc change.
I've had a look around and I'm thinking of using -
Brembo 4pots (Mitsubishi Evo 7,8,9,10)
Toyota twin turbo 325x30 discs
My question is, is it worth going this route or buying the likes of a Willwood kit.
I reckon i can get it sorted for about £250-300

Dave999 is your best man for conversions (he lives at Twickenham, which is ironic) but it will have to be translated into human.
Providing the engineering is sound and fit for purpose and safe you will find Brembos are fine. Wilwoods will cost you at least £800.
A lot will depend on the wheel size you want to run as it impacts on Caliper clearance and Disc diameter.

a good few years ago, 5-10 now, if you could get Disk spindles
you could bolt on sumitomo calipers off a mid 90s 65/75 series landcruiser Hilux/4runner and use them with the smaller vented disk/hub off a mopar
4 pot cast iron calipers designed to stop 1.5 tonne truck with a 1/2 tonne load capacity pleanty good enough if you paid respect to brake bias (smallest rear cylinders you could find (dodge Dakota truck)
it involved taking 2-3 mm off the circumference of the mopar disk
making 2 small sleeves out of 15 mm copper or ally pipe to convert the metric holes in the clipper mount to a size similar to the imperial UNF bolts for the spindle
and getting some Mopar to metric banjo brake lines made up
issues
1) if you got calipers of certain hiluxs they were for none vented brakes and the caliper mouth needed a bit of clearance with a grinding disk
2) they are quite heavy no heavier than standard mopar
3) its quite hard to find B body disk spindles. A body not a problem because very car after 1969 in Australia had them and A body spidnles are a little shorter between the balljoints and B body and they usually take small balljoint taper
the beauty was 2 working Toyota calipers could be picked up or £40 or less
and the offset of the hub/disk and the clipper was only about 2 mm out (not an issue)
the pads are the same size and shape as one of the wildwood models and those used on a range of Jap performance cars so you could buy street and race pads
and
the Toyota calipers are lug mount on 3.5 inch centre like Jag XJ 4 pots
and Austin princess
all the same as MOPAR A B E slider caliper bracket mount
i.e all 3.5 inch centres between the lug mounting.
these days there are many kits about pre built up with the hard work taken out.
for an A body I still think Aussie spindles hub and disk and aussie VJ girlock calipers (off valiants fords and holdens) is the cheapest bang for you buck
I got 2 new old stock rebuilt callipers for £70 with £40 shipping
for a B body I think some of the stuff from ram man and Dr diff sounds great.
if you want to make your own and are a bit handy

1 set of sumitomo land cruiser calipers £40
1 set of jag XJ calipers £40
the Toyota calipers are crusty but serviceable
the jags are good cores only but easy rebuild
Anton APD automotive also made up some brackets so the Toyota callipers could be moved out so he could use a standard sized large 11 inch mopar disk... this causes a few other problems because the radius of the disk is now greater than that of the callipers intended use which caused a bit of pad overhang
I used them both for mocking up. jag calipers were too big for 14 inch wheels
then I found the NOS standard ones mentioned earlier and used them to see what my brakes were supposed to be like when new......and they are really quite good, project stopped there and I started on the motor instead

the aussies used them as well VG and VH just nobody used them for a long time due to lack of locally produced Pins and bushes
most Uk chargers had them i.e the VHs
Kelsey 1 pot and I think 4 pot pin and bush mounted sliders
the pin bracket has a 3.5 inch mount

think the 1 pot version was also used on the earlier mustangs when optioned with discs
which means the early mustang brake bias thingo works quite well if you fit them to a mopar
both had Kelsey pin and bush slider caliper disk front and Lockheed/wagner/girling derived duo servo drums at the back.

Dave, yeah, the brackets are a swine. RamMan does 'em for a col £160, newly forged, but given that callipers and pins are now available again (mine are good anyway) it's worth it to me for the simplicity of the swap.
This conversion can be done to a 68-70 B Body if you choose to use slider callipers and the cheaper brackets and then bolt on the 12" Cordoba vents. Rock Auto do them at £110 a pair and they are drilled and vented.

Managed to get this sorted and the car has now just passed its MOT
Ended up using
78 Cordoba Discs £36 each from Summit via Steve Lang
Drum spindle spacer from Dr Diff
Landrover 110 vented 4 pot calipers £100 new
Caliper brackets and caliper spacers £220
Also upgraded to a servo and 1 1/4" master cylinder
Stops really well
The guy at the engineering company said he is happy to make more, which may bring the price down.
