Fitting a trans shield to a 727

Post by GJUK »

Hello,
Do I need to remove the gearbox to fit a trans shield to a 727?
I've not offered it up at all so I can't see if that would be the case or not - thought I'd ask here first :D

It's an A body if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

It depends on the type, but most likely the answer is "Yes".

Mine is a combined Trans and Flex plate shield and it really needs to go in with the Engine and Transmission together at the same time...

Thanks.

I'll throw it in the loft for a bit then!

You will have to remove the trans to fit the shield and depending which one it is you may need to do some serious surgery.

They only type I know of that fit the stock tunnel are the transmission shaped carbon fibre ones. Any other style and you'll be cutting out the tunnel and making a bigger one, ask me how I know

Maybe it would be possible to fabricate something to fit inside the car, over the tunnel, across the floor.
I know that doesn't help if you have the part already

The car?! That is a bit extreme :D

Yeah I might have to do that, I'll offer it up when the time comes for the engine to come out and made fastererer.

That's the type I had in my Coronet.
I am installing same in the Challenger and they are a LOT smaller than the boxy steel ones. A "B" Body tunnel seems a fair bit bigger than an "A" Body. Maybe they are close in size as both had 727's fitted, but I bet the "A" is more snug.

Blankets are ok, downsides are weight, thier ability to hold oil and if you have a trans that runs a bit on the hot side it will make matters worse.
The sheet ally shields are probably the best for the job but they are bigger than and a differant shape to the stock tunnel, meaning surgery.
The carbon fibre shields offer the best fit and are still SFI spec. but I have seen photos of one after an explosion and it gets destroyed like the rest of the box. I assume it absorbs most of the impact but there is still likely to be collateral damage.
