I remember being in New York in the summer of 1982. It was dirty, smelly and hot. These pics bring it all back.
We drove through the Bronks too. The cabby told us to duck for a mile.

Yeah, I was horrible in the 80s but a great place to visit now. All seems very familiar as we've all seen most of it on telly. Nice there in the snow :thumbright:

I wouldn't go that far Steve, I thought you were quite nice in the 80's.
:D

I presume Kojak is just out of shot on the last pic.

Now that is a stunning car. No stupid big wheels etc , just looks perfect. I've been doing a bit of Winter reading of old muscle car test reports etc and most rate the 440/6 as the best 'standard' Mopar performance engine, followed by the 340/6. I'm surprised at how poorly regarded the 426 Hemi was for street use. Great picture!

A Stock 426 has very little torque compared to a well set up wedge, so it's harder work.
Remember though, originally a 440 red lined at 5300 and a Hemi rev'd to 6000! Heady times!

A lot of people could not manage the solid cam maintenance regime and that the stock Hemi's rockers are not roller tipped and wore like mad, resulting in even more adjustment requirement. Chrysler changed them from solid to hydraulic cam to mitigate some of this...

Interesting Pete, seems like the 426 was a definitely an engine for the competent owner who could work on it properly. The 340/ 440 appears to be more like a turnkey option. The tester in one of the chapters I read said the 340 was consistently quicker in the 1/4 mile than the Hemi despite Mopar factory mechanics being on hand to tune etc. Traction was an issue too. Very interesting reading. The tester was very critical of Mopars in the build quality dept

Here's a base model 340 keeping up with a 426 Hemi.
