Underbonnet heat - Best Anything I missed ?

Some great ideas there Dave - I am always grateful.
Gonna get blues hoses, get the timing gun on see if vac is connected.
Get rid of the bubbles. (Nose up) Might give it all a good flush before refilling just to be sure.

Loads to go at. Old fan was good on clutch but cowl not tight - good inch or so gap.

I am sure the root is just sheer heat (rather than cooling system inadequate)- it is epic you can feel it coming from under car. Cure that (run in, vac,flow) and we are there I think.

Just fettling away. Initial had moved - 11deg. Have knocked it forward to 16 - should help. Need to take a reading make sure all in 34/35 but will do later.

Also discovered that vac can is not locked off; so we will have a play with that later too.

Dug my flowcool water pump out; that can go on later.

Add some miles...

Vac can have me 40 on idle…. ( so an extra 24 deg) - not taken for a run yet.
It’s poss the jump to 16 init from 11 was enough anyway.

So do blue hoses run cooler then?
Don't be fooled by the blue = cool, red = hot.

Seriously though, do you mean blue silicone? Surely they do black? would look a lot less chavvy.

Yeah; slowly slowly.
Good news is the car appeared to run fine with the vac can on (something I have never managed before) - bad news is heat still fairly mega BUT not too worried yet - one thing I noticed was I tested the vac can on idle when car was fairly cool. So idle was idle.
Once I'd been out for a run, the idle crept up from sub 1,000 to about 1,300 - too much - and likely not delivering vacuum at the manifold. So I have knocked the idle back down - so hopefully we will get vacuum on cruise/idle again.

Fettling fettling...

Main thing to do there is check the all-in advance (should be all done by 3k).

Other things underway
- New smooth hoses to fit.
- Radiator flush cycle (just in case ; for £20 of stuff its worth a go)
- Flowkool water pump to go on
- New coolant, slowly added, nose in the air, bubbles out...
- Keep playing with the timing.

And the main one - Just get some miles on the thing and remove some of the friction.
I always thought the thing to do was baby them in for the first 1000 - but chap who built it suggests leaning on it normal too... but it comes down to the same thing - 'get some miles on it'.

PS -
Fitted some lovely new buttons , quite discreet, can control the 2 elec fans independently now. 1450CFM each.
Once we get it all under control we might actually go back to mechanical. Dunno. For now the electric have a purpose - they keep ME cool in traffic knowing that I can blast the heat away if I need to

Phew, that's a relief.

Harpenden last night. Worst traffic yet getting into the showground.
40 minutes in a traffic queue - Not even crawling most of it. Temporary lights - the works - dreadful.

HOWEVER - I am super happy.
Rock solid 180 on a general cruise.
180-195 generally tooling about.
Sitting in the queue with one of the twin fans on - sat rock solid at 192-194.

This is super news as it means I can now, with some confidence, actually get some miles on the car and reduce that friction and heat a bit.

I'll still complete the other bits (flush, flokool, hoses etc) as a matter of course - but not being terrified the second you see a line of brake lights in front of you is really good progress. Super happy

For ref, here is the very natty twin switch. I can control each fan independently; I now know that just one is enough to keep it cool in a queue but I have a backup/boost if I really need it. I might actually put one of them on a temp switch in the hose; I'll still have one for manual backup then. I dunno. Fettling fettling...

Spoke to a friend about a similar issue.modern ally rad blocked solid with a sort of jelly. He had the rad tanks cut off, cleaned all the core with wire and then had tanks welded back on. This was on a racing TVR Tuscan, so American Ford V8.

1) mixed blue and red coolant (mistake)
2) ethanol/fuel contamination of coolant/water mix (head gasket)

same scenario in breakers yard carburettors.... rain fuel and aluminium + a long time= jelly
