Wow... I always wanted an 850CSI. Had a bit of a thing for Bimmers at one point after owning a 540 which was enough to make anyone love them

badly shimmed starter ate the flex plate - litterally the day I drove her home from the MOT station. Should be back on the road for the weekend. Maybe.
She's a "Custom 400", which means a 340 high compression 4 barrel motor dual exhausts and the "super turbine" switch pitch ST400 trans (with altitide compensation apparently). I have all the paperwork with her from new, dealer PDI, the lot. She was spec'd with a lower ratio diff as well which is nice. Someone obviously wanted a bit of a family hot rod sedan. She now has a Postons cam, Carter AFB 625, B&M vacuum modulator and a few other bits I don't recall now. Goes bloomin well for a small block big car.
Thats all the dust from sitting in the garage over winter on there.
This is more what she looks like when clean:

Can't beat the old switch pitch TH400. Had a friend in the US who had a '79 Deuce and a quarter with a built 455 and a switch pitch. He activated it with an extra main beam floor switch for racing purposes. He had four of us in the car when we went Hootering the only time the GS Nats were held at National Trails and killed a big block Chevelle off the line on Bryce Road. Car ran 11s.
340/350 Buick is under-rated. Driven a couple of GS350's and they motored well, but the 430/455 is so lightweight most folk went for the cubes.
Cool car, Alistair.

The Olds has a very similar trans. I think the switch pitch works slightly differently on that though, or so someone was tryig to tell me. I also think the SP doesn't work and its stuck in low stall. When its sorted I'll check all the switch gear out. But thats another story. It certainly doesn't feel anywhere near as lively as the 'lil Buick does, but gearing does play a huge part in that I guess. (the olds is like a 2.93 rear, excellent f you mash the edal at like 50 and it just pulls like a trooper in top, but it lacks that low speed feel that a lower geared car has)
Interestingly the ST400 is quite a different box to the TH400. I got a bunch of TH400 service parts and guess what - they don't fit! pan gasket, filter, valve body, all different and thats before you pull anything else.
The only thing I don't like about the ST400 is theres no part throttle down shift, its full throttle only. part throttle only activates the high stall mode. Apparently theres a trick to use an Oldsmobile valve body used in certain years which will operate the S/P correctly and give automatic part throttle down shifts.
crikey thats a whole lot of irrelevant blah isn;t it.
