Sorry for the Hi-Jack but if someone has a set of 340 heads for sale at an non Ass Rape price I'd be very interested.
Would seem a shame to blow a set of 340 heads on anything but if there's plenty of 318/360 heads going spare. And I dont just mean me! I have no pressing need for them just now but someone with a 340 might?? Though I would like them!

Standard 318 heads with a bowl port job, valves ground in with a twiddle stick and green stripe dual springs for the .484 cam, nothing carlos fandango....

Heh heh, no. But it would be nice to have a set on standby if ever I wanted it put back to Stock, as far as possible obviously.

Ivor, I'd be interested to see if the heads without cracks (The original set off this block) would be saveable. Couple of seats are well worn and pitted, but it's got to be worth a shot?
Miles, thanks for that offer, I MIGHT have a collection trick up my sleeve, but it's a long shot. Otherwise, it's not really feasible, sadly.

But thanks for the offer!

Hokay, dusted off a few of the snaps from the past couple of weeks. Yeah, I know most of it's boring stuff, but it's mostly so's I feel like something's happening and keep the motivation up.
So, like Gareth said, finally got round to cleaning up the heads. Didn't start out too brilliantly... But still at this stage figured that it was nothing a good old wire brush wouldn't sort out.

Fair old bit of rust showing down behind a couple of the valve seats on the other one though. Wasn't entirely sure how bad news that was, if at all, so got busy cleaning up anyway.

Yep, wire brush or shot blast those heads and a light lickeroony with the valve seat cutter will have those ship shape and Bristol fashion, I reckon.

I blooming hope so, Ivor... My bank's going to cut me off if I keep spending on this project...

Can we have a crack with your grinding kit, please? Best to bring the heads to you and have a look, or bring the kit to the mountain?
Anyhoo's, got the wire brush on the go and got through one head, thinking it had cleaned up nicely, right up until those pitted seats reared there heads. That's when the saga started, but you know about that already, so I'll not go on.
Decided it was worth trying to clean up the valves anyway, so after transferring all the gear to Anton's patented "Head-bits-keeper-togetherer" the drill went in the vise and out came the emery cloth. (I await the slapping for the method.

)

You can see from the pics that the valves faces still didn't clean up brilliantly, but not really sure how brilliant they need to be?
In the meantime, out with the wiggly sucker stick (Ooeer, Missus...

) and the grinding paste. Quite pleased with the way that came out. (I know, I know, using an uncleaned head, but it was a good seat so thought it would be better. I stand to be corrected.

)
And a gratituous shot of Anton's box (

) just so he knows it went to good use.

Stu, slide the valve into the guide and make sure it doesn't wiggle around like the old proverbial in a top hat and if they are okay bring the heads down to the the Twyford Speed Shop and we'll get the valve seats sorted.
Can you let me know the inlet valve size to make sure I have the right cutter?

And don't nip any more valve stems in the drill chuck without wrapping them in something protective. Otherwise you will create marks that will groove the valve guides.

Dave's right, you naughty boy...and don't clean the stems up with 80 grit to hide the chuck marks!

You're a Gent, Sir. Cheers!

Valve guides are ok, so will take you up on that.

Sure the inlet valves are 1.88", but don't quote me n that, will have an accurate measure up this weekend.
Dave... Where were you before I did that!

Oh well, it's done now. You live and learn, I guess. Can the stems be cleaned with 80 grit to hide the chuck marks?
