Well yesterday's showing off for the wedding has highlighted an oil leak That's a good thing though, as now I have chance to fix it before my marathon trip to Portsmouth on Thursday!!

Dunc to the rescue- I phoned him this morning and thankfully he has some seals in. I'm off tomorrow so I can pick them up in the morning and get it all back together the same day.

The oil's been draining over lunch so I'm about to drop the sump. One of the best things about my car is how easy it is to work on (part luck, part design!) 2 bolts to drop the steering rack off the crossmember and that's it, the sump can come off

Okay, so I also had to drop off the clutch cover and loosen one header...
All done and cleaned up, ready for new seals. Time for a well-earned cuppa

Gaskets and seals collected from Dunc this morning.(as well as a couple of horns to try and a selection of door lock clips.)

Motor back together, full of oil and run up to temp with no leaks so far. Thanks mate, big stress averted

That can be a bugger - I was doing a "Red Arrows" with that engine and it had an INTERNAL oil leak....valley to inlet runner....what a bugger to find - you can't ACTUALLY prove it, you have to deduce it and then do it!!!!

Well the trip to Southsea went well, but not without a couple of issues.

Nothing that got in the way of driving it all the way there AND back and delivering the Bride safely to her wedding

The wedding bit was great fun, hooning around Southsea scaring the locals!

The trip home was much less worrying as the pressure was off. Still a bloody long haul, with 2 fuel stops, baby feeding stops, wee stops, food stops, taking a wrong turn and having to battle through Birmingham city centre just as Villa fans were spilling out on the A38M, etc etc

The car drove great. Aside from big noise, small brakes and lack of smoothness at low rpm it felt fine. The clutch never slipped again, even launching it away from the wedding crowd only got smoke from the tyres not the clutch! The temp stayed high but never got any higher, the caliper bolts stayed tight. (I did loctite them anyway).

So, issues...
I still have an oil leak. It looks a lot worse than it is- the whole front and underside of the motor etc are dripping, the dipstick still shows full though. It must be sneaking through between the inlet gasket and the head gasket. I'll have to clean it all off and start all over again.

I've found a supplier of obscure UNF/ UNC fasteners. I'll replace all the caliper bracket bolts as they're operated above and beyond the call of duty. ( http://shop.aseriesspares.co.uk/product ... -hardware/ )

The gauges have really p1553d me off. I'll be replacing the oil pressure, water temp and volts with brand new Stewart Warner stuff. I may get a vac as well. I've learned if you can't trust your gauges, you're better of without them!

I checked the timing when I got home- 5* over advanced at idle. That most likely explains the hot running. Could this hurt fuel economy too? I hope so...

I took it easy driving there, 60-65mph, little or no booting it.
The wedding though was an excuse to hoon... A good half an hour of full hoonage.
The drive home was easy for the first half, then once I waved motorways goodbye near Crewe meant hooning and stuck at 70+ with lots of booting away from junctions, etc.
I used £190 in 300 miles.
At an average £1.15/ litre, if my sums are right, I make it around 8mpg.
