well first things first, get a kickdown linkage(or cable) or half your budget might be going on a gearbox rebuild...

Any bigger and you will loose throttle response and driveability.
Dave, Holley make a 390cfm 4bbl. They pop up regularly on the NSRA forum as they are popular on Rover V8 engines. Also popular on tuned slant sixes

'Tis true. We have a spare with a rebuild kit that owes us some money, don't we, Bro? 390 took us up a peg, but we did quite a bit of other stuff too.
So what is the current spec?

Now a 360 sounds more like the sort of thing i was thinking of, perhaps i should have given more detail, the dart has a 270 V8, 3spd auto (no kick-down at the moment) and a 71/2" axle, would it be feasible to make the required changes(engine, trans + axle) for say a grand - 12 hundred quid??or am i dreaming

, i want to share the total budget between paint interior and power increase.
Oh, hang on... I just remembered how to read...

Hmm,

a 360 on a 7 1/2" sounds like short axle life.

Maybe, but it may hold out long enough to save up for a new one! I'm not speaking from experience here, mind! it may be worth consentrating on the ebgine and if the diff fails then change as and when!

Aussie CH barges had the full luxury trim were big and heavy
had a 360 and the borgwarner axel which is 7 or 7 1/4 inch
this was through an auto so they are kinder to the diff than clutch and manual but
unless you drag race or use engine brakeing in the extreme the axel should hold up fine
Its the sudden application of torque or a sudden loss of, or regaining of traction under hard aceleration (especially one wheel) that kills a box or an axle not necessarily the ammount or torque you have you have on tap or indeed the peak power output.
Granted gunning anything away from the lights every time will eventually wear out a diff but you wouldn't need to drive it like it was made of glass either.
at least with a 7 1/4 parts should not be an issue eveyone else will have pulled it out and replaced it with a big one so there should be a supply already here to keep you going for a good long while.
nobody wants the aussie ones so I've picked up two for £75 a pop
would guess proper US ones are just as popular (especially non LSD)

wow!! a lot of info to consider

, OK, what if i take the option of reworking my 273? as far as i Know when fightin fit in standard tune it should be about 190HP??? (correct me if I'm wrong please) or is it not worth the effort and expense?.
1,what could i expect to get and stay reliable?
2, what improvements would be most effective?
3, rough cost?

Because of the weight you need about 250-300hp to make it feel "nippy".
Fast takes more.
So your cheapest option is a bigger engine.
