Shouldn't you have left the clutch in the gearbox?
Looking good! What does a "freshen up" mean to you?????? To me it's new rings/bearings, clean the tops of the pistons and combustion chamber, new valve stem seals, new cam chain, a home hone and a ridge cut. Getting any porting? Or fresh ally heads? What bumpstick you putting in? Go for it Fella! Got to break out of those 16s sometime!

I have to agree there Kev. Putting it back in there like that will present a very high risk of damaging the pilot bearing or bending the gearbox input shaft.Kev wrote:Shouldn't you have left the clutch in the gearbox?![]()
Impressed that you got it out without taking the hood off, though. Never tried that one...

It's a fair cop.
However, when we tried to put the motor back in the 4 speed 'Bird, we dicked around for about 5 hours trying to get the motor engaged on the input shaft.
We admitted defeat, pulled the box, put the motor in, and then put the box back on the motor. Horrible job on the floor (might be OK on a lift); and we were exhausted at the end of it.
We tracked it down to a pilot bearing that had been fractionally distorted - we are talking thous.
Maybe doing a small block is easier. I still found it a pain in the Sox when it had a 360 and 4 speed.
Mopar do a roller bearing replacement now, which may be a good idea over the old phosphor bronze jobbies.
