I used to have '48 Mercury coupe which i bought an expensive (150 quid) fully breathable/waterproof cover for, and used it for about a month, then took it off and kept it off. Better off leaving yer car uncovered and wash/wax it regularly if you ask me

Bought 1 of those light grey "100% waterproof / Breatheable" car covers from the states a few years back.
Rubbish.
Soaked up water and sat between car and cover.
Used it twice then gave it away to a friend with a car port.
Ideal for a car port or garage as a dust cover, but defiitely not outside.

Was thinking about configuring some contraption for the car like a roof rack with soft feet, and a car width's length of wood with soft feet x 2 for the front and back then cover with a tarp.

That should keep tarp off of car (ish) , but allow air flow but not water flow.
Just a thought.

I bought a covercraft one last year. It was pricey, but the car was outside with leaky weatherstripping and horrible condensation so I didn't have much choice. It's been great, in very heavy rain some water goes through, but it does clear off relatively quickly. I don't use the provided wire rope and padlock supplied because of possibility of paint damage where it rubs against the rocker panels. Its been subjected to some pretty heavy Geordie winds, but cos its a custom fit it has stayed on pretty snug so far.
I recommend Cover craft - as I say not cheap, but then neither is a) building a garage or b) respraying and rechroming the car! :D
