Spot on, can`t believe that you could`nt find a decent local guy to paint it for that kind of money, all this talk of paint having to cost phone numbers is just Bull5hit :thumbright:

If it's a daily driver paint job, without any major panel damage, you can get it done down this neck of the woods for about £1500, you can even get a Fred in Shed job for about £800... and I've known those jobs to last a few years before they start going scabby.

It's horse for courses really, but if you want a decent job, you should be prepared to pay decent money.

And I'm not teaching granny etc, but always use a paintshop on personal recommendation and experience, there are some total toss pieces out there that can cause you untold grief.

Paint

Post by Anonymous »

Hi Folkz,

As we all know its not about paint at all, its about preparation.

Most people can paint a car, even a novice, as long as the end result is shiny, its OK, So why so much?

Good paint is about 100quids a litre x 4 litres for a b-bod plus lacquer if its a metallic, plus primer and etch. then theres all the discs and rubbing, blah blah blah.
So you're looking at anywhere between 800 and a grand materials.
Allow a day to mask and paint, so thats gonna be 1500 all in!!!

The rest is all prep costs, stripping paint, panelwork and BONDOing!
That can double and even treble the BILL!!!

It wasn't that long ago you could geta repaint for 250quid, but did you ever see one done. IT would devalue your Jamjar to scrap prices!!!

Baccy, the choice is yours, read 'em and weep?

Baccy's right, decent materials cost money.

Cheap paint jobs, by definition use cheap paint, usually imported stuff.

Preparation is likely to be sketchy at best and this will be reflected in the final result.

I could set up my bodyshop again and offer a cheap version of what John Castleman does at JPC, but I don't think I would live that long!

I had the rear valance corners cut out and welded panel work made by the blokey

both doors welded

the car bottom 1 foot preped and sprayed

dents and a crease taken out of front wing

both doors sprayed

all body stripes impacted by work re masked and touched back in

all body stripes clear coated with the clear featherd into orginal paint (cheaper than getting it all done)

mirrors wipers spoiler re blacked in matt

and a full waxoyle underneath and up the sail extensions, inside the boot and inner wings

£1500

the bloke does work for the local dealers, insurance companies and people who don't want their husband, wife or business to know they had a bit of a bingle with a bollard.

He came on reccomendation because he does things the old fasioned way.

i.e why spend a fortune on a patch panel that don't fit when i can make one that fits your specific car.

steve park???? (er?? inson??? the phone cut off the end of his name) number 07946397657

however finding his place is fun

take the 488 out of shrewsbury to Minsterley then Ploxgreen (sounds nasty)

Just after Plox Green take the road to the Stiperstones

the road starts with a stone bridge
turn left at the end of the bridge
the bloke is called steve and he will be in the bigger barn at the back of the plot
don't trip over any of the ploughs and MGBs in the yard. looks dodgy but isn't. he's a nice bloke and he'll pick you up from shrewsbury station once the work is done.

he takes his time......thats the one thing that is a draw back but as in my case if you give him a deadline like " plull ya finger out Its the NATS". he does all the work in the last 48 hours

happy with the work....it puts the rest to shame :)

this black strip had an inch wide cut and dent right through it and the trailing edge of the wing was rusty.

bottom leading edge of door had met with a high curb
full door sprayed

the only bit he missed was polishing out the line to the right of the RT badge. was aploogetic and i needed to go to the NATS so i said id' sort it

I'm keeping a low profile John!

Just paint my own now, or very close friends...with the good stuff of course.
