My understanding is that if your car is not registered, and is insured on the VIN, then you have off road cover only.
While you have off road cover, you need to tell the insurance company when and ask them to issue you with a cover note if you need to take the car for its MoT or to any other location for work.
This issued cover note will only cover the car driving if it is going for its MoT. Despite what anyone will tell you, if the car is not registered, and is insured only on its VIN, it is not covered for road use unless you tell the insurance company and they issue you a cover note to cover the car.
This cover note is also required to cover the car if it is being transported by trailer.
This is why, with unregistered cars, you have to pay a full road insurance premium, but only have off road or storage cover.
You are encouraged to take out full insurance when you collect the car from the docks, but, if I was told correctly, this lapses automatically to off road cover after 30days if the car is not registered.

Woody wrote:No they wouldnt play ball. I had promised them a reg number though and if everything had gone to plan, it would have worked out. But for some reason they were not happy with just the vin number of the car until such a time as I can give a u.k reg number.
I wont be ringin' em back when it's sorted out either.

Name and shame them mate!

With the new automated systems used by the police, they cannot check a car's insurance online if they can't read a number plate.
You shouldn't be driving on the road without a number plate which you only get if the car is registered.
Once the car is registered, you have to inform the insurance company what the reg number is so that they can ammend your policy and 'convert' it to a full road insurance.

Sandy thats the cover I told them I wanted. But they ( MCE ) wouldnt do it!
I was with Adrian Flux the last 2 years, but changed because I never recieved a cover note, (when I insured my 3.0 ltr Capri with them also) and when I came to tax it, it was registered as uninsured!

Normally insure on the chassis No.,cover note 3rd party only. MoT must be pre booked, assuming car passes then get registered and as soon as the number comes through contact ins co. with the new details

Gobsmacked by the letter I got from my Insurers today-!
As you may know I have only had the Challenger a few weeks- I valued it at a few grand over what I paid for it in case the worst happened
I expected them to refuse this valuation because last year when I tried to do the same with the Cuda I was told that I couldnt insure it for more than I paid for it- ok fair enough
Letter arrives today saying that their "engineer" (whatever that means) beliieves I have vastly underestimated and that I may want to insure it for 30-35k!!!
(almost double what It cost)
All I could think was that this is a new way of upping premiums- but the extra to have the agreed raised from 22- 35k is only 30 odd quid-
Still dont get it??

I think that's dealerspeak for "losing" something on the insurance Clivey....
There was a bit of that going on a few years ago with classic policies, which is why they've tightened things up a bit.

I've been getting quotes for the Challenger and the best I've had is £190! That's as much as the (modified) Satellite. Last time it was about £130.
I've tried Adrian Flux, Footman James, Sureterm Direct and Graham Sykes. Who else can I try?
