Good point Dave, you would think that the max turning moment would be around the "fixed" point IE the differential end.
So Maybe the bearing pinched it or there was a hairline fault in the half shaft?

Exactly the same thing happened to Richard Eaton on the Pod startline back in the '80's. That was in the Roadrunner that Nick Wood now owns, was a 4 speed car on slicks though....

I will say it again. I have heard of green bearings being blamed for this on occasion. I was advised years ago to avoid them.

No, not really.That shaft from the pics, has been under torsional load not a bending moment and judging by the surface of the break, it has gone from elastic, to plastic deformation due to cyclical TORSIONAL loading. That is a fatigue failure and probably not due to inclusions in the material or stress raisers on the surface. Are there any beech marks in the grain (closeups?).
That thing had signed its own death warrant ages ago, and it has just given up the ghost. NOTHING is infinitely strong, and gawd knows Ad's half shafts have put up with some abuse.Everything will fail in time. Ad just needs a higher grade steel / better quallity set.

Can't see any reason why green bearings would stress the shafts , these bearings still turn fine , don't pinch the shafts anymore than the tapered one's , what's the reason Dave?
The shaft snapped between green bearing & hub , so definatly a flaw somewhere , would of thought the first place it would go would be where it tapers from 2" down to 1 1/2" .
Talking to Bob & he says there's no difference in diameter between the 23 spline & the 35 (made a mistake , mine are 23 spline) , soooooo , just gotta find a replacement , gonna do both sides.
Mullered me brake shoes & ripped the springs & pins out the backing plate , gonna put this motor back to stock.

I can't remember. It was pre brain damage. All I remember was someone advising me against them and the gist of it was axle failure I am sure.

rest of the shaft is long enough to flex/twist
either a shaft will break at the end of the splines (at the centre section)
or where this one has, as it thickens it cannot twist so much so breaks
nothing to do with the bearings more to do with diameter
the piece between the splines and the thicker diameter is just one piece of elastic

Always wondered why the shaft tapers , do the aftermaket shafts also taper?
