I found American street maps and road atlas to be most unreliable and really quite expensive (no ordnance survey

)
yup it great knowing you just passed the turn for Lower Canyon Road but what city/town is lower canyon road in?? the map won't tell ya and if it does it won't match your other map because lower canyon bleeding road isn't on the other map and neither is the freeway you are on...... well it may be, but it has a name, a state number and an interstate number and all are used randomly and with no logic across all instructions, maps, and directions you have and sometimes the old road and the new road still have signs with the same number on them aaaarrrrrrgh.
and if you take an off ramp because you are lost. it will be an off ramp with no on ramp paired with it. At least not in the direction you want to go....its entrance will be where you think it should be, but it will corkscrew under the road somewhere and send you back from whence you came. The on ramp you need will be ten miles back and probably off lower canyon bleeding road, you'll be able to see the on ramp you wanted but you are now on the other side of the freeway and their aint no exit to lower canyon road on this side, in fact on this side of the freeway the city town or metropolitan area that includes lower canyon road doesn't even exist..... all off ramps go to a massive Howard Johnsons with a 1 way system in its car park that is 10 miles long.
oh yes
some freeways have right angled turns in them, southern California seems bad for this, 6 lanes of full sized pickups all trying to stay in lane. if you are tanking along and suddenly a speed limit sign says 15mph believe it...there will be some traffic planning idiocy just around the corner.
and some states/citys have no real standard for the height of their curbs ,sidewalk or traffic island
you will take out the bottom of your door or indeed ground the sump at some point whilst executing a quick get away or an about turn when no one is looking
rotaries are roundabouts and are reasonably rare in the north East and over the west coast (them being the bits i've been to)
some of them work like here. some of them don't, giving way on the roundabout for those wanting to enter is sometimes randomly sprinkled into the mix for no other reason other than it must have been a good laugh. half the locals have no idea what to do either
Amercians in NY state rhode island and massivechewsets are quite happy to go further than 180 degress round the things in the outside lane. unnerving at the best of times but doubly so when you are doing everything the wrong way round.
oh yeah
the sign you need to read is usually the one hidden behind a sign you don't. street furniture frenzy in some places
and if you pass the offramp sign sorry its too late..... you passed the off ramp
long sighted and psychic is the only way
I haven't been since the advent of the SAT NAV
