Sounds daft but are your primary jets big enough ?
Had exactly the same problem on my chally - Put a new carb on and the car would idle & rev real sweet but only to a certain Rpm - It would then just stutter & drop down.
Turned out the carb used to sit on a Rover V8 and jets were 52's

I think so mate. Can't exactly remember, but either 72's or 74's.
I had a similar problem (well at much higher revs) with my Superbird.
It had an Edelbrock on it. The jets are mounted vertically so if the pump draws up sludge from the tank, the main jets block. A Holley does not tend to suffer from this as the jets are mounted horizontally.
If it is an Edelbrock, the fuel pressure will still look OK, but the jets can be blocked.
Best resolution is to find a waste bin and deposit the Edelbrock in it.
I await incoming from the several users of Edelbrocks... (show and shiners
It's a Holley Pete. I got to say, I tried an 850 dp Holley on it as well. It couldn't handle that at all, and just died completely above 3000rpm. Too much fuel going in me thinks. I'm pretty convinced it's an ignition problem. I'm going to try and make a better earth for the ECU. Going to check the resistance across the dizzy as well. Neil's supplying a electronic voltage regulator, which may (or may not) make a difference. It has to be replaced anyway.
The motor feels ok (ish) when you first step on it, then starts to bog as soon as the revs try to rise. It's running a 2800rom stall convertor, so it doesn't take long.

Yep nothing wrong with Bananarama! Edelbrocks as long as there set up properly, far better for the street as it just gives the motor what it demands, not just dumping fuel in
Gringo, you said you rewired the dizzy pickup, check you got the wires the right way round. The ignition timing moves about 30 degrees if you swap them round and you will have to reset the timing. If they are the wrong way round the rotor won't line up with the posts on the cap when the ignition fires, (i.e. the phasing will be out).

Cheers Mick, I'm pretty sure I got them the right way round. I've taken a picture of the dizzy before renewing the block terminal, just to be sure...
