That's kinda subjective :)
I think the states plates look great, and UK ones just look, well, wrong.

UK style can be forgiven so long as they are black with white letters. 8-)

I'd like to see that in writing, on some kind of official document. I too, like to be in the right when I'm having a disagreement with plod. But I need proof... ;)

You see. Going by that the US style plates are still illegal as the font style, height and spacing are still wrong.

True, but the Police around here don't seem that bothered about number plates. Besides, is the average driver surposed to know this stuff?

It is amazing how often this comes up.

Remember, what passes an MoT can be different from what is illegal.

If the car is built after 1/1/73 it must have white reflective front plates with black letters and yellow reflective rear plates with black letters.

If the car is built before 1/1/73 it can have black plates with white, grey or silver letters.

Anything else is not allowed.

In other words, States plates, especially multi coloured ones.

Personally, I wouldn't be too worried about the illegality of the plate from a police point of view but more worried about some smart insurance assessor taking a look and saying the car is illegal, your insurance is invalid so don't expect a payout.

Same goes for red rear indicators.

We know they are illegal, we grin and smirk because we 'sneak' them through an MoT and we'll be hopping mad and claiming "we-wuz-robbed" when Footman James laugh all the way to their bank by not paying out.

That document says Vehicles constructed before 1.1.1973 may display traditional style “black and white” plates i.e. white, silver or grey characters on a black plate.
It doesn't specify the dimensions or spacing of the characters, as it does for post 73 vehicles. So, on that basis, US style plates with white characters on black should be legal? All depends on how the word "traditional" is interpreted I suppose.

Incidentally there is a separate dispensation that allows you to have motorcycle size fonts on imports of any age that don't have provison for a UK size plate. Check out page 5 of this amusing parliamentry briefing note, and the subsequent amendment (Regulation 14A of Statutory Instrument 2002 No. 2687) which I keep in the glovebox of my Mustang ;)
