Sorry to nick your thread but if it is head gaskets, i've got a pair of cometic MLS gaskets here for small block, specific bore of 4.080, and a thickness of .040.

To be honest they are not cheap but if everything is as it should be i'd very much doubt they would leak.

One point occured to me, if the block has ever been skimmed have the stud holes been slightly countersunk (5-10 thou) to allow for pull-up when the heads are re-torqued. If not there will be a slightly raised area around each hole ,a sure gasket killer.

i actually know someone who lost both their arms in a childhood pylon climbing incident (OOOOWCH!)

No, not no arms I'm pleased to say, often legless though. I just leave those sort of jobs i.e ones that if they go wrong can destroy your engine, to the experts.

Martin Saville @ RPM did the re-skim and rechecked the compression and it is now 10:1. I saw his workings out.. Ally heads should easily take 10:1 and he said that was what he would of liked when he first built the engine. If you know Martin you will know how meticulous he is.

I'd be surprised if it's a miss fire because of the noise. It's difficult to know if performance is affected because of it overall power anyway. When I did the runs on 7 cylinders it still went fairly well.

The timing was all in at 35 degrees at about 3,000 rpm and is now 30 degrees and it is no better/worse. As I said it is not affected by warm weather etc or if the car is hot or cold. Also it's not long started and it's always been at 35 degrees.

I'm running about 36 all in at 2500rpm. I say about cos the mark jumps about! :D No pinking on Optimax and 106 octane boost, though I've noticed some pinking on the street lately probably due to poor petrol quality. Small blocks like a lot of timing. If you ran some more timing your car might go quick, Tel :D
