Also what's the deal with car hire.

Virgin fly direct to Las Vegas, and their fly-drive packages are often cheaper than renting a car separately. Also, Virgin partner with Dollar who offer Chrysler products. If you want a Charger, upgrade to "full size" when you book, cheaper than when you get there. The car rental facility at Las Vegas is the best I've encountered. Sign the paperwork and pick whatever takes your fancy from the "full size" lot.

I'd second Expedia for booking accommodation. Check out customer reviews at Tripadvisor. Casino hotel accommodation can be surprisingly good value, but traffic can be bad to get from the Strip across town to the Speedway, which is a few miles NE of LV. The Cannery Casino hotel is on the north east side of town, but it's the HQ hotel for MATS, so you might struggle to get a room. We stayed at a nearby Comfort Inn, on E Craig Rd. Was basic, but clean and comfortable, and included buffet breakfast.

We stayed at a place called La Quinta which is about 5 miles from the track (junc 48 on the I15) and was the hotel of choice for one of the top fuel teams taking part (which was nice).

Used Alamo for car hire and tooled around in a Challenger which made for a nice comfy drive up to the Grand canyon/Hoover dam etc.
