If some of the other Ford hi performance engines are anything to go by I would imagine the cammer had huge ports and valves meaning it made bugger all low and mid range power which is probably where the "unstreetable" tag comes from. I know for sure Holman & Moody made port restrictors for the Boss 429 to try and give it some street manners.
No they didn't John, your right, and your prob right about the way they delivered the power, as you say Ford did like big ports and valves (351C), thats IS probably why the cammer never made it to the street, and the boss was a flop really....so long live the 426 Hemi....

But as Pete says the solid version was a nightmare for lash/wear, and not much better with the hyd set up. Roller Rockers are the way to go for the Hemi and any rpm type motors, my 440 went much smoother with the HS r/rockers and v/adj was almost forgotten, every time I re-checked the lash they were spot on....can be worth 4>5hp? on a flat tappet mtr with std type rockers....(Mick) ;)

Most septics will say RR's are worth 20bhp but i am sure that is a bit on the keen side.

Having said that, turning over the hemi with the big cam and springs; the load is immense so I am sure reduced friction will help.............

It is a fact that that a roller cam set up can make 30>50hp gain in a well prepared race type engine over a normal solid cam installtion.

register and download Camquest6 free, use this for your virtual engine dyno and cam selection simulation...see the difference in power from solid to Roller....or just have a play.....accuracy?....well, close enough, nothing is an absolute till you get it on the track.

There was a black 61 Ford Starliner (?) in the UK, with a 427 SOHC motor in it, owned by Kevin (can't remember surname). Last I heard, he still had it. Got some pics somewhere.

The SOHC motor was actually developed by Ford to trump the Hemi in NASCAR, but Bill France outlawed it, and most of them finished up in drag cars.

That is because the cam lobe profile is radically different. The total lift and duration spec can be exactly the same but the roller cam profile is MUCH steeper so the valve opens much faster.
That means for any given cam spec the valve is open a meaningful amount for a longer time.
