Guy I know in Colorado has cut his hood insets on his 70 cuda to get more air to the carb ( needs it at his altitude ) , anyone got a take as to whether there is any benefit? He cut the underside of the hood as well so the aspect could work in practise. I remember reading something about this in Pete Grist's book but is there any gain??

Yep that's the plan, got loads of stainless and aluminium sheet at work that we use for commercial boiler flues, goin to make a tray that fits under the carb base.
Dunc gimme the idea a little while back and he had good results with his, that's what prompted me to try it :D

Are you talking about a heat shield ? like this?

Jay Gilmore over here with the green '71 R/T modified his twin snorkle air cleaner to hook up to the hood inserts.

I drilled the rivets out on mine to remove the rain guard at the rear so that any air entering the two scoops was directed to the air filter. My six pack air filter was 3" tall too so it was in direct line.

Good idea?

I think the greatest benefit was allowing heat to escape out of them at idle in traffic.

I doubt very much that you would get any "ram" effect as they are too close to the surface of the hood. If anything I suspect you would get negative pressure at the openings when the car is at speed. Same way a carb works.
So i think opening them up will suck air out rather than blow it in.

A wind tunnel test would prove that. But something that points to that is the fact that no matter how hard it rained, my air filter never got wet.

When I had the six pack bonnet on my cuda the filter would get soaked when it rained and it would ballon up at the thick end of the strip hence the reason i went with a cowl this time

They raised the T/A scoop up off the bonnet surface for a reason. Drag scoops are always tall.

I was thinking cold air box rather than a ram air system, and running the cool air around the sides and back of the filter housing.
Early days yet, main objective is the clearance and weight at this point but if that disruption to the air filter and carb Venturi has a bad effect I'll just duct the air to the motor :thumbright:

Took out the inserts and cut back of scoop inserts out and the same in the mounting boss on the hood
4 little screws out and youve got fresh air feed to the carb....i found it works well enough at the moment
when you put the inserts back youd never know ;) ;)

Remember seeing a pic of Pete Austins 71 cuda at mid track with a nitrous burp, the flames came out forward,I reckon,as Dave says, they wont work at speed.

Looks cool though :thumbright:

Well we all know more air is good ,the question I have for you Steve is did the car go faster with the scoops open?

I have wanted to do some sort of under the bumper/valance area I think it would be more effective :mytwocents:

I am sure you will find that the air in the first inch over the hood is negative pressure. In particular in front of the scoops as the airflow lifts over them. Like an aircraft wing. In fact if you look at the curve of the hood it actually looks like the top surface of a wing.

My money is on the scoops actually drawing air out of the engine bay if you open them.

I think Dave is right.
This is why the T/A scoops are the shape they are - the first inch of the scoop lifts the opening out of the boundary layer of the air flow which is "sticky" and into the air that will flow into the scoop.............

Most factory hoods and scoops are purely asthetically pleasing garnish; though some like the fresh air hoods and the cowl inductions are more scientific and do help performance .........
