On a "Chunky Monkey" of an engine, I have found that flow is more important than pressure; though the 2 are obviously related.

I will chuck a Holley Regulator in the car when I come up.

Next you will be asking about fittings.....and whether to dead head or return to the tank.......

Nahh you can dead head a mechanical.

Another thing. When I sold my Challenger it STILL had the original (85K miles) pump pushrod in the block. It never wore out. Just as well as I never could get the damn plug out to remove it.

I know you can, it's just not a good design in any application - you being anal and all that.... ;)

I would dead head it in this instance with a pressure gauge on the "other" port.

I have a couple of pump push rods at home and they are Friar Tucked.

Once the hardening goes through on the cam end they wear like a bugger.... ;)

You pair are just showing off now!! Im lost, the big fellas rule

I know its not an exact science, just trying to get her as reliable as I can if you know what I mean....

Just had the top off the carb, put new needles and seats in, checked float height which was fine, cleaned the metering rods and put new silver springs in, new retaining clips to hold metering rods as one was binding, cleaned jets, new main gasket, stripped choke down, cleaned, spring fine, leaned it off, new gasket on cover and fired her up...... Running fine.

The acid test will be if she starts in a couple of hours ok or floods????

Little steps eh... Thanks for your patience and advice with this.... Would be lost without it! :thumbright:

One last thing... Getting a bit confused with the various ways to set the choke (electric 1406). Anyone got a simple laymans explanation? Read so much on it ive confused myself

I removed the choke on my Holley six pack and never used one again. You really do not need one unless you need to fire the car up from stone cold and drive it straight away.

Without a choke all you need to do is pump the throttle three times, start the car, then keep the revs at 2000rpm with your foot for 20 seconds. Then slowly back your foot off to bring the rpms down over the next minute. Then blip the throttle a couple of times and she should idle fine and you can drive off. :thumbright:

If you do this you have to make sure the choke flap stays open. Or remove it completely.

On my Holley I machined the whole top of the carb off to remove the choke.

By "machined" I mean i took a Bananarama! angle grinder to it of course.

:iagree:

Have mine cable tied open. Have no issues once i've feathered the throttle for 15 seconds or so!

Cheers Dave.... I would rather learn the knack like you have than worry about flooding all the time!

If you think it has flooded (smell of gas, etc) then:

foot to the floor - DO NOT LIFT (you will just operate the enrichment pump again and make it worse) and

Keep cranking whilst knocking one out over the prowess of your new mini-starter.

When it fires lift off a bit sharp-ish...... :thumbright:

And NEVER stomp on the throttle before starting when the engine is HOT.

I had a mate come around for me to check his carb because of bad hot starting. He was stamping on the throttle 3-4 times before turning the key the muppet.
