PETTYBIRD wrote:Many thanks Carl, Dave and Jon for those kind words, I have to admit i'm still grinning like a Cheshire (sorry Dunc!) cat, it was the best fun I've had with me kegs on! :thumbright: And to promote the club is a great feeling, let me know if you get any feedback from the States Jon. And now to the workshop to fix all the broken bits: both headers cracked, bent front spoiler and n/s rear oil seal etc etc, thinking of putting a manual trans and a handling kit in for track days / demo's etc
I was wondering Don, when you first put the car together, did you ever think you'd be subjecting it to the kind of use (abuse ;) ) you did at Brands on Sunday, or did you think it would get used more for drag racing?

As tough as drag racing can be, I would think a few laps round Brands going as fast as you dare, soon finds any 'weak links' that might not become apparent even going balls out up the strip every once in a while

Personally I can't bare driving a car that does not handle very well. So any Mopar I get in the future has to get the suspension upgraded as a first move. Which makes it expensive to build of course.

It was the suspension and brake upgrades that kept my Challenger off the road for so many years in the 90s. I simply didn't have the money to finish the car because of it. Which is why I ended going into partnership with Mrs Woodhead for a number of years. With her paying 40% of the bills I finally got out of the hole I was in.

Not something a man like Don has to worry about though. ;)

I would really like to build an AAR Plymouth clone. Something better than my old Challenger. I might even be tempted to make it a Dan Gurney clone. That would be interesting eh?

No lack of plans and ideas in me. Only a lack of money.

I've had the idea of building a replica Petty 'Bird kicking around in the back of my mind for many years after i sold my original 'Bird. Then the basic tub turned up in S. Carolina i think around 5 years ago and that was the start of it. At that point i did'nt really have any idea what i was going to do with the beast. It had come into the UK with a nice 383 cube in it which i was offered a good price for so i started thinking about the motor. It seemed obvious it needed a hemi to be a near copy of an original so then i more or less got it finished and registered and drove it to Wheels Day 2010. I then realised it had some serious potential as a race car and the rest you probably know.
This last weekend has been quite a learning curve for me and yes, circuit racing is definitely harder on the car. When i finished the demo laps i took my helmet off and immediately noticed the car sounded different - both headers cracked - i dont know why yet. It has also spat the n/s/ seal out of the rear axle. The Impala chucked something up at me and i finished up with minor damage on the nose and a bent spoiler.
Bernie Chodosh rang me today about circuit racing the car in his "Bernie's V8s" series and he said the same, its very hard on the car, but then it is a copy of a famous race car so i felt last weekend the car was finally at home, even if it does get used / abused!
As for the future of the car now......i'm in negotiations with my Brigitte!

Daveman, you've some great ideas....one day eh? :thumbright:
