Alternator trouble 30 volts !?!?

Here is a partial picture of the earth strap on my Fury. I thoroughly cleaned the bracket hole, stud and nut then mounted one end of the lead with a big star washer under the nut, onto the bolt letting it hang down. You can see it hanging down on the far side of the picture.

Its not fitted fully on the pic as my radiator was out but when it was back in, I looped it up at the other end and bolted it under a rad mounting bolt(cleaned all faces to bare metal etc). Its a belt and braces lead as the alternator should earth through the block but its better to have than not to have. Another thing to check is that some rad supports are rubber mounted but it should still earth through the bolts that hold it in place.

Thanks mate for all the info. Before I can tackle the bypass I'll put a list together and get all the parts I need (earth strap, connectors etc) so I can get on without having to keep stop/starting.
I've read through the description and third time round (!) I am understanding the majority of it.
In a nutshell would I be right in saying that the alternator on a standard set up re-charges the battery via the dash ammeter gauge? This makes sense as when this was disconnected a few years back I couldn't even start the car. It took me a while to work out WTF was going on...
Apologies to anyone reading this thinking how obvious is that :roll: but you are dealing with a bloke who only usually opens the bonnet to check the oil (and that's not that often :oops: ). This is unchartered territory for me...

Morning Nick,

good idea getting all the bits together first. A few of us use a company online called AES (will sort link out). They have lots of electrical stuff.

There are lots of connections in the Mopar charging system from the factory which is fine when everything is new but after years of use, connections oxidise, wires go brittle etc and heat builds up due to high resistance in the circuit.

One of the easiest things to do is to very carefully separate the bulkhead connector and carefully clean the electrical connections inside.Then pack it with dielectric grease (MickRR put me onto Dow Corning DC4).

The path of the charge from alt to battery on the original system is very complicated and full of points that can cause issues. It goes from the alternator into the engine bay side of the bulkhead connector, out of the dash side of the connector, into the ignition switch, out and into the ammeter, out and into the underdash welded splice, back out through the bulkhead connector, through the fusible link and finally into the battery!!! Horrible and plenty of opportunities for resistance and heat to build up.

The bypass cuts this right down to just a couple of connections between the alt and battery, and replaces old wiring with good new stuff.

Im a novice at this Rich and have to keep notes on everything as I forget stuff quicker than I learn it, There are tons of diagrams in the various threads on here that are very useful and explain the theory behind whats going on and definately worth trawling through.

Back home from my shopping trip laden with all the electrical gear I hopefully need. Absolutely bloody chaos out there, why so many people feel the need to buy furniture/carpet/clothes on their Xmas hols is beyond me :roll: . At least Halfords was quiet, until I turned up in the Charger that is. The young lad who served me was adamant he would have or could get the parts I wanted including a new alternator. Funnily enough his 'computer said no.. '
Anyway I will crack on with the easy stuff first and see how I go.

Nick. Its best to change the alternator and voltage regulator together as one can knock out the other. And make sure you spend time on testing the circuits.
I had an intermittent fault with my regulator that when tested quickly seemed fine. ! ;)
