That may be the reason the nut wont go on fully but the bearing is tight on the shaft, also if i push the shaft from the bottom, it's enough to make the bearing come out of the housing.

I'd strip the column to make sure the bearing is in the right place on the shaft. Some dolt has probably whacked the end of the column to get the wheel off in the past, that's enough to force the shaft through the bearing, I've come across this several times before.

Bearing was tight but i've got it off, when i took the case off, the toothed wheel to lock the steering has a little tin cup over it, then the rear spring clip but in front of that is a small collar, which i think should be in front of the casing on the ind side ?
The pic shows the wheel with tin cup and the small collar in front of it, the front groove is covered by the small collar ?
