If you jump on the throttle you are getting the noise when the engine is under load but not at peak revs. Most likely to get detonation then.
If it's safe to hit full throttle with the car parked, does it still make the same noise ie when it's not under load? If not it would indicate pinking.

You were right Carl, it is pinking. Went down to the Test and Tune meet at North Weald today and met up with a few of the lads on here.
JohnS kindly threw his timing light on it and it was bang on. Following Blue's advice I put 5 gallons of (118 RON) race fuel in and on the way home it was like another car! Pulled like a train with no problems even on full, planted-to-the-floor acceleration. Now need to think about tuning the carbs and getting them right. Thanks for all the advice guys.
