If you jump on the throttle you are getting the noise when the engine is under load but not at peak revs. Most likely to get detonation then.
If it's safe to hit full throttle with the car parked, does it still make the same noise ie when it's not under load? If not it would indicate pinking.

Unless it's the fan

Could be too much total advance, needs to be set for our best fuel, race fuel won't be a cheap fix long term.

Or it could be the fan

I still think its Detonation Steve, sounded like it when you took me out in it, I think you said you had dizzy converted to electronic?

Have the carbs been set up correctly, could be running too lean?

Have you got the correct heat range plugs in?

You were right Carl, it is pinking. Went down to the Test and Tune meet at North Weald today and met up with a few of the lads on here.

JohnS kindly threw his timing light on it and it was bang on. Following Blue's advice I put 5 gallons of (118 RON) race fuel in and on the way home it was like another car! Pulled like a train with no problems even on full, planted-to-the-floor acceleration. Now need to think about tuning the carbs and getting them right. Thanks for all the advice guys. :thumbright:
