The 305 sbc is whats in my '85 tpi Trans Am, that has not been rebuilt in nearly 20 years and still has good oil pressure for its high mileage and was used daily for many years, not a mega engine but so reliable I love it just like what you have there, they make a nice later classic.

Maybe as cheap for you to install a 350 / 383, but I still intend to rebuild the 305, with the super charger they can be pretty quick. :thumbright:

Indeed I read a Thread on on of the Chevy Forums where they got 400bhp out of a 305 so there is potential. The Summit Racing Crate Motors look promising too with 420 BHP for around $4500 from a 383 Stroker. Could do with a passenger door before swapping the Engine though really :help:

I was wondering about the rear end too,I guess an LSD Diff or Axle from an IROC or similar would go straight in,would I really need a 9" Ford though?

IROC-Z and other GenIII Camaro and firebird came with 10 bolt axle or 9 bolt axle ( which is a borg warner/BTR engineering/spicer axles Aus Model 78)

the BorgWarner was stronger but it is the aussie axle, so parts are harder to get and it has a cone LSD

great to drive but never lock totally and last only about 60K miles before they ware out. they are separate cone and side gear design so can be machined and shimmed to restore operation. unlike auburn cone centres where the cone and side gear are just one lump of metal

you can pick up an 9 bolt axle out of an IrocZ or other GenIII Camaro firebird in the UK for about £250

late ones had disk brakes 89-92 and of course chevy/holden bolt pattern

they go for about £300

gears start at 2.77:1 and go up to 4.11:1 but you want one with 3.23 or shorter gears due to the split in the ratios across two styles of centre more options with a centre designed for 2.92:1 and up

place in Watford often has one on ebay

some GenIII cars were warranty replacement fitted with a dana 44 used to fix broken 9 and 10 bolts for some reason.

aussies ran BW M78s behind 360s I'm not going to say that's a good idea for anything other than driving.

there are guys drag racing them

most would sling the centre and put in a spool or a truTrack and use Moser axles in 28 spline (same size of spline as some of the ford 9 inch axles)

its a 7 3/4 inch ring gear.... small by most standards but it would appear that quality control was excellent and they hold together quite well

TA performance do an alloy girdle and you can build them up with solid pinion spacer etc to be really quite good

you can bust an axle behind anything but I'd say these were good for standard small blocks up to 360. in valiants the 360s still had the 25 spline axles 28 spline didn't come in until ford and Holden started running them behind v8s

when the cone centres ware out you tend to snap off the spline on the 1/2 shaft

GM in the US put a dana 44 in as warranty replacement if a 9 bolt bust but that was more to do with local supply than anything else

I'd guess they are weaker than them but don't classify them down with the mopar 7 1/4

if GM stuck em behind 350s with 28 spline axles they can't be that bad

Third gen firebird axle will be quite alot of hassle to fit as they just have two control arms and a panhard / torque arm arrangement , 78-88 G Bodies have a four link style arrangement with upper and lower control arms , the best axle for G Bodies is the 8.5" 10 bolt from the Grand Nationals , all of the other G bodies of the era have 7.5" , good luck finding a GN rear end over here though, there was a bloke breaking a GN in wales a couple of years ago though. Strange, Moser etc etc , all do bolt in rear ends 9" , 12 Bolt and Dana 60 all with the factory mounting points so will bolt straight in, these are fantastic cars had quite a few of them including a 86 Monte SS that ran 12.80's with a 406ci with 2.56 geared 10 bolt from a 78 cutlass.

I don't know if F & G body parts are compatible, but I still have a rust free Buick Grand National door in my shed. I kept it when I sold my GN. Think its drivers side, can check if you want it. Got glass too.

Grand national door is different , all the G Bodies ( Monte Carlo , regal / grand national , Grand Prix and cutlass ) all use different sheet metal only the basic chassis is the same and possibly the wind screen.

yes to be honest not a fan of the choclate 10 bolt, id either go 9" or 12Bolt.

there's plenty of 10 bolt parts and upgrades but they always let go in the end, especially with a t56 in the front being driven hard autos are a little softer on them.

cracking car though i love G bodys, ive had a Regal itch for a while now....... :thumbright: :thumbright:
