John, what you can do is the get the car running up to temp and then slacken the dizzy bolt. Then rotate anti clockwise slowly and see if the revs pick up. If so keep rotating until max rpm is there. Then back the dizzy off a touch.
Leave the car five mins and see if it start without dragging the starter down. Of ok, go for a run and see how the car performs and report back.
If a big blog, rotate the other way!

Will try that, still don't understand the no spark on one lead though, points towards ignition system?

Before messing with the timing again and if you haven't already, if they will reach, swap a known sparking lead with the one you say doesn't spark Jon. Also try your timing light on number 6 lead, it will give you the sane reading.

Hi John,
I tried that, same reading not constantly sparking.
I tried a new rotor arm also and that showed no improvement.
The coil is banging out good strong constant sparks, I could try another dizzy if someone had a second hand one for sale? Or I'm edging towards getting a new MSD 6AL-2 ignition box, dizzy and coil pack.

Have you cleaned inside the cap and checked for tracking marks? It sounds like a dodgy cap.

Yep cleaned it up with wire wool, done the same on the rotor arm.
HT leads have been changed - no change in no spark to some.
There are some marks in the top of the cap where the metal contact points are. Let me take a photo and post it up.

Looks interesting, all contained in the distributor? Just need a coil and away you go?

Cleaning with wire wool can make it track out. Always clean the end of the rotor arm on a rubber block or side of a tyre too. A gentle scrape on the terminals in the cap with a sharp knife is enough and then clean out all the inside of cap with meths on a clean lint free cloth. Or buy borrow another cap to see if there's a difference. I presume the top bearing in the dizzy is OK? could be upsetting reluctor gap if wobbly.

Thanks, top bearing appears okay, rotor arm is solid and does not move. I've cleaned the top cap out with no real gain, maybe there is a crack in the dizzy or issue with the orange box. I've been chasing this problem for a while now, I think its time to start replacing parts
