Well, I hope im wrong about the sprag, but the one visible flex plate bolts is certainly tight. I won't know until the weekend.
If it was a bolt come loose it would be hitting something all the time which is not the case withy my symptoms.
Believe me if you heard what sounds like a host of demons trying to cut their way it of the trans case you would understand why I've now parked the car pending further investigation

Maybe, but this might explain my problem too;
'The biggest concern with a Torqueflite automatic valve body is the transmission (not the driver) downshifting back into 1st (and this never applies the rear band). In the wrong circumstances this can damage the sprag. Like when lifting and the tires stop spinning, the trans goes into 1st without low band apply (selector in 2 or D), and the driver hits the throttle. Or the tires grip, slip, grip, etc.
Then any time the selector is in "D" or "2" it can go into low gear on its own and the sprag won't hold, allowing overspeed of the front drum.'

Yes i would be worried about the rear roller clutch, it does not like to be shocked, n you shocked it, but if it is you have been very lucky the high gear drum did not leave the building,

Maybe I got lucky Dunc.
The first evidence of any problem was when I went to drive home and heard that noise. Not when I was giving it stick t the start line.
Been reading up on how not to Bananarama! up transmissions. Might have to start a thread , ' ways of screwing your trans for the uninitiated!'

Pete, I believe low band apply is retained with the TF2 kit, but the bolt in sprang looks to be on the list if needs be.

Ok, couple of hours in and the flex plate and retaining bolts were all fine so it's trans out and strip time. Bolt in sprag etc..

The bolt in sprag is not a fix for this problem,, it was a repair for when the case had broke under some conditions, if your case is not damaged it does not need a bolt in job unless you are goimg to buy a kit with more rollers than stock,,
to avoud the high gear drum from exploding the only fix is to replace it with either an alluminium race drum or a billet steel street drum, the sprag can still roll but the drum wont explode,,

Thanks Dunc, in my ignorance I just thought that a bolt in was a cure all. Think I'll start a new thread on 'things that break your trans that you didn't know about!'

And raid the piggy bank harder, those sexy drums don't come cheap; but neither do new feet.
