Miles, you could get a new stud turned and threaded and fit it. The alternator comes apart pretty easily, just 3 bolts. Remove the brushes first, then undo the 3 bolts and take the back off. Get what's left of the stud out and get a new one made.

Thanks Mick. TBH, it's been on the car a long time, so a replacement was due, but I'd rather have chosen the date for it
