Just a reminder - Bone stocker 360 with an inlet and a Holley 4 barrel, has decent compression and doesn't smoke or use oil.

I started this late in the day so didn't get that far:

First off, with the vac advance plugged, I advanced the dizzy until the rpm levels off - An attempt to find out how much initial it 'wants'. It was like 32BTDC.... had another go and settled for 26 BTDC initial. And it restarted ok... but that seemed extreme for a stock engine?

So I thought 22 was more appropriate for stock (was that a mistake?).

Next up I thought 22 initial + the 14 slots on the FBO plate would make 36 total advance. So we fitted the FBO limiter plate on the 14 slots and set it to 22 initial BTDC. Plugged the vac advance can back in and ran the engine at 3K rpm. We got 42 degrees of total timing. Unfortunately I ran out of time/day light...

Question - Is the recommend total mechanical advance of 34 degrees with or without the vac can plugged in? (hopefully without, otherwise I have done something wrong?)

Is my scenario above fine? It does not seem to be pinking although it was not a thorough test drive.

you are going fine

get the vacuum unplugged
spin it up to 3000+ rpm and see what you have for total mechanical advance

if its 34 all good for the time being

plug in the vacuum advance and go and see if its a little more peppy. listen for a noise like two large greased cogs winding as you accelerate from low speed through the gears its an indicator of too much advance sounds like a diesel. its should be crisp quick if it lumbers and makes that sound too much at that rpm...
when you lift off you should travel way further than you thought was possible.....you know you are in the right ballpark.....it should feel eager....

vacuum advance can pull timing up to 40+ but it does it when the mixture is poor the throttle is shut, mix burns slowly so no issues unless you have way too much vacuum advance...worry about it later

if its starts when cold with it at 22 initial without kicking back at the starter i'd be surprised but never say never...

i'd be expecting 15-18 to be enough

but wander round the back when its warmed and idling see how it smells if it has a fuel smell and the last 1.5 inches of the pipe is going black eithert the idle mix is way out or you have too little initial advance.

This all sounds very familiar. I just cant run vac advance at all even when mechanical is bang on. I've swapped the vac can for an adjustable but not played with it yet. I might have another go when its back together.
