I dream about cars like this too. And in that dream I am painting the bits behind the grille black. ;)

Thanks for the tip Dave, that is probably the only angle you can possibly see the Plum crazy color behind the grille, fortunately people usually only see the rear of my car and for a short period of time as it vanish ahead and they disappear in tire-smoke :D

Ps. Just have a cool one for the hangover.

Took your advice. Also added a Thai style Chineese curry and a spicy Ko-bu chow mein. My head thanks you. My bowl does not.

Why is no-one siting near me this morning??

Exactly what happened in the design studio. They decided to spray matt black paint on the visible bits to get around it. One of the reasons the grille was re-designed for '71.

Also painted black was that ugly flange that hangs down from each sill at the sides.
On all colours, except TX9, EB7 and EF8, the flange below the door sill ("down-standing flange") was painted Organasol Black on the outward face of the flange. No overspray was permitted on the bottom side of the sill section.

The front side of the radiator closure panel, below the top support (upper radiator "U" channel) and underneath the hood latch plate was painted Organasol Black except for TX9, EB7 and EF8. Overspray was permitted half way into the inside headlamp area.

Actually they did the blackout in 71 as well (even with the grill change), as they did on most other muscle era Mopars, so it would be surprising if that's a reason why they changed the grill in 71 (but hey, who knows with Chrysler!).

Also, I thought Organasol was the textured black they used on 70 cars? I'm pretty certain the blackout was just matt black, not textured organasol??

The way they sprayed it was to have a guy in a pit as the car passed over, so he shot upwards, coating the bottom of the rad yoke and underside of the top bit too. As usual with Chrysler it was a bit hit and miss and somewhat messy!!
Also seemed to vary which body colours got it. In principle it was the light colours, but a lot of the dark ones did too, sometimes even on medium blue too IIRC (EB7)
Still to do on my car, I'm waiting to get the latch support on first, and also to decide which paint to use!

The 70 grille ended up being a quick fix for the problem of getting enough air to the radiator. They spent more time designing the 71 version but it wasn't much better. They then tried to go "retro" with the 72-74 with a shape reflecting the old Chrysler grilles. It flowed more air though.

I guess they had many reasons for the re-designs.

The other painted black bit which raises questions is the top of the cowl. Which cars got it and which didn't seems to be a matter of debate whenever it comes up.

Very true! That seems even less clear than the yoke blackout. At least everyone seems 90% agreed on that. I think my cowl was blacked out from the factory (I certainly redid it black when I repaired that area first time around). This time I'm not gonna bother! I like it without as well.
Also blacked out (on mine at least) is the trans tunnel underneath the shifter mechanism (in case you could see through the console).
