I've just tried this and it really worked! I was amazed. Great tip.
I added a light coat of Meguiars Hot Wheels to Bananarama! off.

Mate of mine sprayed my tyre walls in something from 'armour-all' that looked like shaving foam.

You spray it on, leave it, is slowly disappears and the tyres look like new. Sounds like voodoo I realize, but it worked. I'll find out what it was...

Yeah I have some of that tyre foam stuff as well. I've heard mixed reports about it damaging tyres.

It doesnt do much for raised white lettering though...

To try and stop your tyres going grey with the sun, use saddle soap.

WD40 - the answer to half of life's problems. Gaffer tape and zip ties cover the rest between them ...

i had the same trouble getting the letters clean on my old rangie off-roader, spent hours on them, then oneday i was using an old tyre to hold up some parts i was trying to free off with the stuff, wiped the tyre by accident and hey presto, years of grime came straight off.
i was expecting a Bananarama! off of some-one on here after saying to put wd40 on the tyres  as i am not sure about the long term effects on the tyre walls with wd40, but at least then it is an excuse to go out and light them up! :D

Never use WD40 to help rubber bushes on etc. It rots 'em. So I'm not too sure on using it on yer tyres  Raised white letters would be alright I s'pose. So how do I get the dressing off my brand new spankly Mickey T Sportsmans? 8-)
