Dougie, if you get the correct balanced B&M flexplate then your 360 will bolt right up to that 904. You will need a car pan and pickup and cut and reweld one side engine mount bracket ( can't remember which side, but it will be obvious) other than that it's bolt in. Sounds like the 727 is a short tailshaft truck box, better to get the correct passenger car box if you want to go that route as it's a bolt in deal with the correct length prop

And at this point i always add.... need to cut and shut the left hand side engine mount to fit so try to get the 360 mounts as it makes life easier.Plus.. i have a balanced flexplate to fit a 904 as long as the 'vertor is 9 or 10"!

Without hijacking too much, can a US axle bolt on in place of AU type?

Yep, my 8 3/4 went in in place of the 7 1/4. Just need to make sure the spring perches line up and you need the u-bolts and bottom plates, plus your prop may need shortening, can't remember that far back! :D

Any axle will bolt onto any leaf spring rear. It is just 4 U-bolts and a perch. All you need to do is sort out the width and of course US a-bodies are the same width as AUS a-bodies.

The 360 sump has a smaller radius on the rear seal than the front. All other SB's have the same front to back.

904 will take the power of a stock 360 ok. It will even take more abuse than that but it's ultimate lifespan will shorten somewhat. The 727 is a stronger box but Blue and Kev have been working on some trick ideas for 904's, so don't be so quick to discount them unless you are building serious power.

The Borgy is different to the US 7 1/4 but shares some similarities. Having the removable pumpkin is an advantage with the 8 3/4, as is the increased strength. I can't say how long the stock axle will last, guess it depends on how much you abuse it. Certainly with a strong 360 the tempation will be there to boot it and as a result the axle will have to give at some point.

What it all comes to down to is the weakest link. When you increase power the part to break first will be the weakest part, if you strengthen certain parts then others become the weakest and therefore are more likely to break first.
