Dave, would you like me to come up there and bash you with a big stick instead?

You are a glutton or punishment, but all credut to you for having a go, I'm always up for saving things rather than replacement, which is why may radiator has now expired :(

Center carb almost done. Just the vent on top of the fuel bowl to finish and one or two other minor bits.

The bit of the vent above the fuel bowl had melted into a ball. Some carefull cutting and it works again although it is a bit shorter than it used to be.

The plastic cam for the choke fast idle was burnt and melted to hell. It was also tight on its shaft so would not come off with the choke in the warm position. A bit of work with a stanley knife, drill and file sorted it out.

Amazingly the choke vacuum can still worked.

Only new gaskets needed were the little coke washers around the idle mixture screws.

If this was a top class restoration I would paint the carb bodies with a gold tint you can get from Frost.

So far so good.

Bit of foam de-greaser and a wire brush for the most part. This takes off the original thin surface plating of course. But this wears off anyway with time.
I had to strip each carb to individual pieces first. This was most important with this centre carb because it is the main carb and contains all the idle circuits etc. I had to make sure all the little holes and passageways in the metering block were clear of dirt.

Like I said. The only hard part was getting the choke to work.

The two outer carbs should be easier as they are very simple. The intake manifold will be getting sand blasted.

Interestingly the jets are stock and the idle mixture screws were exactly 1.5 turns out. Suggesting to me this induction may have never been tuned to the engine. I understand that the engine ran very well so there might be some extra potential still in it.

I know. I am being lazy because I have so much time to do it in. But the wife was watching that "How do you solve a problem like Maria" program and I can't bloody stand it so i did this during the program.

Well. Tim wanted the carbs painted like mine (although I am not sure that any fuel spills will not Bananarama! off!) so I am in the process of doing that.

Meanwhile here is the intake manifold. Normally you will find that the holes are only tapped half way down. This is because the original six packs used studs.
However studs make it tricky to get the carbs on and off so i always use bolts.

I like to tap the holes as far down as I can and use longer bolts. There is less chance of stripping threads that way.
