I found this further down the page from the World Finals the same year-
I loved the 'Black Mass' Marina coupe, powered by a BB Pontiac motor i think- used to get wildly out shape, great fun! The Panic funny remains my favourite to this day- great looking car and could always be relied on for a great spectacle with monster burnouts! I also well remember the Coca Cola funny blowing it's motor (at 3:11). I got this pic of it... spot the newbie cameraman

db, I believe the Black slug as I called it ran a 440, absolute pile of poo...but it had crowd appeal I guess, doubt if they would let anything as dangerous as that run today.
Deffo the good old days at the Pod, always remember "Hemi-Hunter", and couldn't believe how quick Russ Carpenter was with the Daimler powered rail, and the best named car in the History of Drag Racing, "Stripteaser", A40 with wild wheelstands....aah the early days were the best in some ways, was just starting out in Street class then driving to and from Race meetings in the '71...........

Well I was never one for slagging off cars in front of others, I normally kept my views to myself and my crew, I guess the Tech guys in those days were somewhat liberal with their views on what constituted a safe car and let it run.
In complete contrast, in the other lane in the pic, is what looks like "Shaky Pudding", an immaculately turned out bread van who used to run in street class, nearly dead stock, older guy, used to bring his family for weekends out at the track.......

I was too young too know or care about safety or build quality! If it went sideways, it showed he was really trying...
I remember Shaky Pudding too, another fave of mine.
I don't think i'd seen a Mach 1 in the flesh before (we lived sheltered lived up in North Wales y'know- all sheep n Landrovers )

well Jon, it seems to me that all I go on about is the Racing side of things on here cos thats what I know most about, and not that many of you are into it in a big way like I was so I guess it must be a bit boring for most of you having me ranting on about 1/4 mile related stuff most of the time in my posts.......but as always, if anyone wants or thinks I can offer any more useful info about this 340 or any other set up or anything else that was specific to the cars I had, or other...I am always more than happy to bore you even more...just ask away....

Not a bit of it Les- loving all the techy stuff and the old pics and stories are great! I was only just discovering yank cars and drag racing in the 80's so it's great to get all this background info on the scene and the cars that gave me the horn back then- even if to the trained eye they were complete sh....ers
