Cheers Dave... Assume I just leave foot off, crank her over and as soon as she fires just tickle her when warm??

Mrs gone shopping so just popped out and disconnected choke.... Fired up great! Will do some experimenting with hot and cold starting over next few days :thumbright:

With all that initial timing you have now you probably don't need to touch the throttle at all when the engine is fully warm. Just turn the key. Otherwise wait until it fires then blip the throttle slightly.

I think us old guys forget that younger generations are used to fuel injected cars that just start with a key turn. I don't think I even owned a fuel injected car until I was in my 30s?

Not decided yet but I might run down to the NEC on Sunday. If you are around I'll say hello. If not I'll take a dump in your car so you know I was there. :D

I had a mate come around for me to check his carb because of bad hot starting. He was stamping on the throttle 3-4 times before turning the key the muppet.
Been there done that on the first day of ownership!!! #-o

A step most have gone through! Once warm it starts on the key only! :thumbright:

I owned my first Carbed car at 30 (yup the Dart). I'm one of the FI generation! :binky:

Gettin Bananarama! off with this now.... Disconected choke, started this morning, warmed up... Moved on drive. Switched off. Hour or so later, tried to start her.... Engine spins a treat but nothing. Foot to floor hold down, crank over 30 secs or so, nothing... Any ideas?? Nothing has changed since she was running and in a couple of hours sure she will start again.... :help:

Are you sure it is flooding at 1 hour - are the plugs wet??

I wonder if you have an electrical problem on the ignition?

Does it fire and then die as soon as you let go of the key?

Are you getting spark at a plug as you crank?

Bad fuel pump? works when cold fails when warm,be sure the carb is getting fuel, when you have a no start ,do this diagnoses as soon as it fails to start,
Look in the carb for fuel ,pump the carb under hood and see if it squirts fuel, and as Dave says check for spark ,disconnect one lead and have someone start the car and see if there is a spark between lead and plug :read2:

I feel your frustration as this has happened to me I HAVE a similar issue that seems more like a bad connection ,

my car will start and run, then I drive it for 10 mins and shut it off and it will turn over but not run when the key is turned to the run position,if I jiggle the main wire harness on the steering column it starts, so I have some electrical gremlin in there somewhere now I have to find that

I assume it was flooding Pete....maybe (probably wrongly) im just so used to it flooding with the choke connected that I just thought she had flooded again , hence foot to floor and hold. Cant check spark on my own but just been out again, fired up, spluttered for a second or two as if clearing excess fuel out and ran lovely. Blast round the block, home, starts on the key instantly!!! Didnt check if plugs were wet but as she was bit lumpy for couple of secs Im thinking they were too wet and just needed to be cleared. Im obviously getting fuel and a spark cos shes running nice and my limited knowledge is telling me if its intermittent, its more likely to be electrical than fuel...... When I turn the key Dave, she catches and stays runnin when I release the key.... Only prob I had like that recently was on the auto choke start up, sometimes she would fire instantly, run at about 1500rpm for a few secs then die instantly.... Would then turn over but flood so I had to take plugs out and leave for a few hours for everything to dry out. ...... Only thing not new in elec system now is the orange box??? Still wondering (guessing) about the fuel pressure.... Got me stumped now gents.... :help:

Sorry Drew, didnt get your reply before i started typing.... Wasnt being rude... Honest :D

Good suggestions, can easily check the carb next time on my own, just struggling with spark check till mrs gets home.

Just a thought.... Car was running for about 5 mins on the drive before I switched off initially.... An hour later, would this be classed as a cold start? Should I have pumped the pedal a couple of times again maybe??

Cheers Steve
