Merry Christmas All!

Been busy...

The head had new valve and valve seats by a local machine shop, all put back together and she lives. Running on 8 for the first time in possibly a long time! Huge thanks to my Dad.

We have also fitted:
- A new vacuum advance unit
- A new fuel pump
- Rebuilt the carb
- A new neutral safety switch (after i started her in drive...)

I'm pretty sure there is a lot more I have missed off, the van still needs attention, she does not like to idle very much but drives good once going.

I started on the interior, new ceiling panels insulated and lined in some period-ish material.

Thanks chaps, got a little more done over the festive period, less of the mechanical and more of the tarty interior stuff :)

The ceiling is 3mm plywood stuck to batons, the batons were bonded to the van roof. Seeing as there were no templates or old ceiling panels the ceiling took several days just to get the wood to shape. Covered in a period-ish vinyl using spray glue. The glue used is from a company called mega van mats in the uk, very good stuff - no carpet falling of walls in the middle of the summer months heat. I used some automotive insulation off a roll, similar to wool but synthetic as it is water resistant. Seeing as I don't need to save weight or space dynamat seemed an expensive option, especially with the amount needed.

The walls are 6mm ply covered in stretchy carpet with insulation behind, again screwed to bonded on batons. The floor is gates automotive underlay, rubber stuff with 12mm marine ply and topped off with non slip industrial lino. Not exactly a period finish but its light in colour inoffensive and usable. - I can always stick a shagadelic 60's carpet over the top if needed...

Wax-oiled areas of the floor whilst I was there.

Still work in progress, the van even with two stupid cherry bomb silencers (silencers???) feels and sounds like a limo to drive in comparison to the tin can it was a few weeks ago! Much refined, but more to do.

In the future I hope to loose the cherry bombs maybe for some flowmasters and have the pipes going to the back. Order a rock and roll bed/seat for the back and start some general day van/camper things. On my wish list is some factory style wheel vintiques 63 style steel wheels with dog dish caps - painted the white colour... when funds allow. It would possibly be a good idea to drive her futher than 10 miles to see what breaks!

Peace, happy new year!

That is a great thought :D

It wouldn't even make it there at the minute, well with difficulty.

It has had many problems -

It had a starting issue - new starter sorted it.
It was only firing on 7 - New exhaust valve and machining sorted that.
It was running rough - Carb rebuild (twice) kind of fixed a little. (helped?).
Still running not as smooth as expected - New fuel pump, no difference.
Still running rough - New vacuum advance unit on the dizzy, no difference.

Well, i am not being fair - The van does run and drive and stop well, the best yet, she just won't consistently idle.

I have placed a wanted add for a 2 barrel carb for a 318 - to rule out that possibility. Anybody got one, or something that would fit the stock manifold?

In the ideal world, I would buy an aftermarket manifold and a 650 holly - however I can't do that at the moment.

Also I placed a advert for a fuel pump to 2bbl carb fuel lines - anybody got any old ones? Or modifiable ones, or can anybody point me in the direction of a UK supplier for this? For the parts and fittings if not a made up unit?

It continues

Still need to get rid of the unnecessarily loud (kind of fun) Cherry bomb exhausts - maybe they are a part of the rough running? With headman headers and two cherry bombs there is certainly less back pressure than when she left the factory..........

Any opinions / help appreciated!

Peace

Update

- New rev counter  :D
- Better pics of the panels with carpet, not strictly 'period' but look tidy.
- Fresh oil and filter.
- New curtain rail with a few 'groovy' curtains up thanks to the GF.
- New top hose fitted (exciting stuff...)
- New headlights - fortunately off the shelf at a local parts place.
- Set of flow masters sat in a box waiting to be fitted...
- A steel frame bed that changes from bed to seat - like in a VW bus.

The van did 20 odd miles over the weekend, between the beaches in North Devon - Happy Days.

MOT in a month though... Bananarama! balls

To do:
- The exhaust (still...)
- Upholstery + Foam for bed
- Wheels (Cragars are knackered)
- A million niggles...

Peace
