If it is a Flat Tappet or mechanical cam you MUST break the cam in, but I assume you know the drill there.

Yeh hydraulic flat tappet camshaft, it was in the engine previously for a few thousand miles, everything else in the engine is brand new, is there anything else to consider when breaking in an engine?

Cam break in is the biggest issue so you can relax a bit.

It helps to pre-oil the motor if you can and check that oil is getting to the rocker arms. You have to take the dizzy out and have a long hex bar to achieve this as you drive the oil pump directly, I am sure it is the same on a small block as its bigger brethren.

Not the end of the world if you can't do this. Remember that a new tight engine will also generate quite a lot of heat compared to a run in motor.

Don't Bananarama!
You need to vary the revs to allow the rings to break in. Although the cam is broken I would still keep the revs up and varied, not let it just idle.

with the weather being miserable today i didnt fancy the start up...so maybe tomorrow i'll get round to doing it.
if i take the spark plugs out and just crank it will this be a good way of getting oil around the engine??
