No problem Jeff............All part of the ownership of old cars. Think it just needs a tune up. :thumbright:

if it has a carter BBD

you need to get the choke right

when cold it should hang open by about a train ticket thickness

there will be a cylinder with a bi metallic strip in it bolted to the hot box on the manifold, it has a push rod that attaches to the choke lever on the drivers side of the carb. as the strip expands with heat it pushes the choke open.

the bit on the exhaust manifold is adjustable if not rusted up.

if it is rusted up Aussie Ebay has a seller who has lots of NOS carter Branded chokes for sale.

To be honest, I think a set of slots would cure it all! :D

Well I've sorted a few things.
Firstly before any driving could be done I had to change the bottom hose. Did the top at the same time. Moulded hoses are much better than the flexible cack. That with all new coolant and it keeps nice and cool.

Whilst doing that I changed the fan belt.......turns out the one on the car was 1.5 inches too long. That explained the excessive belt movement and hose eating. Now much more stable and loads of space between belt and hose.

Running issues.
Well I attempted it myself. Played around with curb and fast idle. Managed to get the fast idle down, but the thing was just woeful when up to temp. Took it for a 5 mile drive......embarrassing. The only way to keep it going was dropping into N and left foot braking whilst feathering the throttle. Had to do this when approaching any junction or roundabout. Other than doing that it would surge and stall.

Get it going though and it was an absolute dream. Nice smooth changes and really responsive. Only added to the frustration.

So this week sent the car to Jim Smith to have him look over it. Pulled all that Vaccum Amplifier gubbins as these are known to fail over time and give leaks/issues. Cleans up the bay a bit too.
Had him rebuild the carb and this is where he found that the throttle blade had been drilled. Had that sorted and put back on and it looks as if the majority of the issues have been found.
It now runs without stalling and having it tuned has reduced the resonance quit a bit whilst driving. Don't ask me why but it has.

Took it out again this weekend........8-)
Personally think it drives better than the Dodge. This I'm sure is down to the manual steering. More feedback whilst on the move. I'd quite happily drive anywhere....Result.

Already Dave? Regarding manual steering, I found it really boosted my confidence in my Dodge truck, none of that wandering feel to it.
Good luck with sale, sure it will soon go.

Small update.

The Brakes have been renewed front to back. Seal on the Master Cylinder went.....so that the reason for the lack of brakes.....

Now has new Master Cylinder
All new hard lines front to back.
All new Flexi hoses front to back.
The drums have been rebuilt.

Handbrake has been adjusted (it now has one).

And to top it off the front has been lowered so it sits level front to back (looks much better).

Following all this work (Thanks Jim), it now has a valid MOT!!!
That one had me nervous...... :help:

Got a new carb coming over from the US asap so that should sort the running issues out. The existing carb is goosed!

Exchange rate is a killer, but at least its now fixed and back on the road.
