If the sidelights are orange then they are illegal. Sounds like that is what you have. Wire extra white sidelights into the circuit (they will come on the first position of your light switch, before the headlights), and fit them into the sidelight holder of a headlamp. You can buy them (old Minis have them), get a 5 3/4 inch dia halogen lamp with sidelight aperture and you will be fine. The indicator being on as a running lamp sounds fine as long as it also flashes when asked to.

Just pull out your fuses and tape over all the lamps for the Mot,there is provision for testing with no lamps fitted at all.

mine are illegal and i've never had any bother

white indicators on a 71 that are side lights (only at night :) )
MOT man just said has it been like that since it was made.

Yes it has

and passed it

one presumes that any policeman who see's me indicating is more shocked by the fact that he has seen a road user indicating their intention before taking action to be botherd with pulling me over.

I use my indicators at roundabouts and when turning at junctions, i have to my brakes are crap and every other road user needs to keep well clear.
Drivers of modern cars use telepathy but the technology is not too advanced yet

Why take a chance on being pulled, or worse, have someone run in the back of you? It's an easy conversion - replace the headlights with units that have sidelights built in, and leave the amber front lights as indicators. At the rear, convert the reverse lamps to amber indicators and run a new wire from the brake pedal switch to the brake lights. An hour's work, tops.
